Hello,

After "upgrading" to the Yosemite OS, the Vassal modules for Here I Stand and Virgin Queen don't work properly any more. The problem is that all counters miss their numbers. For instance, impossible to say if an army counter is a 1, 2, 4 or 6 units counter.

Any solutions to this issue (apart from throwing my Mac out of the window)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Do you get an error? Try updating Java.

Hi Ingolfur. No, no error message. Everything works fine, except the numbers on all counters are missing.

Can you help me upgrade Java? The Oracle help pages on the topic are pretty much incomprehensible, at least to me...

If you want VASSAL to work on MacOS at all, under no circumstances should you be using the Oracle-provided Java bundle. It is shot through with bugs and performs horribly (reports are already filtering in on the VASSAL forums of the program being nigh-unusable on OS 10.10 with Oracle's Java 8).

Revert to Java 6 if you can (this is the last one provided by Apple before they gave up doing their own). Be warned, you might have a hell of a time getting Oracle's Java completely uninstalled.

Thanks Joel for your help.

Here is what "java-version" returns:

java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.1, mixed mode)

As for "which java":

/usr/bin/java

And here is what the Vassal Error Log shows after I start Vassal, load the Virgin Queen module, and then load a VSAV file:

As must be obvious by now, I'm no IT guru, but it seems to me that I'm using the "right" Java version (e.g. Java 6 update 65, the one that works with Mavericks). So uninstalling Java does not seem the right move. Any advice as to a next step?

Anyone MacOS Yosemite users experiencing this issue should read this post on the VASSAL forum. You should have some familiarity with a Unix command prompt before attempting this fix, but it does appear to work based on the screenshots provided.

This bug has been fixed. The fix will been in VASSAL 3.2.14, whenever it is released. If you need help in the meantime, send me a geekmail and I'll give you a link to a test build of 3.2.14 that you can use.

The build made by uckelman (see link provided by JoelCFC25) works perfectly as far as I'm concerned.

Direct link:

http://vassalengine.sourceforge.net/builds/

The build in question is: VASSAL-3.2.14-svn9165-macosx.dmg

That update fixed my VASSAL under Yosemite but the performance hit is huge. I'm actually getting better performance running under a virtual windows machine rather than OS X directly. *sigh*

I suspect I should blame Apple for that.

Ty, can you be more specific? When you say "that update"--are you referring to the solution on the VASSAL forum I linked to in my Nov. 10th post, or the VASSAL 3.2.14 test build linked to by Oliver?

This would be the first report I've heard of the test build adversely affecting performance. If that's the case, try and stop by the VASSAL forum so it can be diagnosed.

It was the 3.2.14 test build. Before upgrading to that I couldn't even launch my prior version of VASSAL under Yosemite.

3.2.14 will launch, but scrolling around a large map like Where Eagles Dare is quite choppy. Also dragging counters around is suffering. For instance, when I click and drag a counter I don't see the ghost of the counter move with my pointer.

I'd be glad to post this over on the VASSAL forum.

EDIT: posted in this thread http://www.vassalengine.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7800
