We are planning on offering up an item for auction, and we want some input from the community in terms of exactly "what" we are offering and "under what terms."

Here is the auction...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/179933/jack-vasel-memo...

This is a cause we believe in and want to support with something special and unique.

We also want our backers of the 2nd Edition to feel like they have been consulted on this. We want YOU to feel like you are a part of this process and helping make it possible.

Why?

Because you are!

(our main focus, in terms of getting input is with the 2nd Edition is the Kickstater backers, but in fact also includes those who have pre-ordered the game, and those who hope to get a copy when it is released -- we want feedback from all of you!)

Beyond this, we also want to hear from all other stake holders in this great game. Meaning those who backed the very first Kickstarter, the Heat backers, and all of those who pre-ordered those items. For that matter...

Everyone who owns the 1st Edition!

We think you all should have a voice in this matter.

All of this will play out in this thread today, and will involve polls discussion, and all that good stuff, so...

Stay Tuned!

In the next post down, you will find "The Offer."

Meaning the item we intend to place up for auction, and exactly how it's being done.

Note that, if the feedback from YOU (the fans of the game) indicates some strong feelings about what we intend to do, then this offer might be changed in some way. So, what you think, how you vote, and what you say DOES matter.

That said...

Take a look and then answer the poll (coming soon).

Thanks in advance for weighing in on this.

2nd Edition BGG Con Special:

Here's what you get...

blankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblank

PLAN A

Common Man Games will be at BGG Con, and (hopefully) with 3 (or more, of the 5 total) advance copies of the 2nd Edition of Police Precinct. Assuming that this does occur, we want to offer "Plan A", which is...
A signed copy of the game to be handed to you at BGG Con in Dallas Texas. You also get named as THE Owner of one of the five original copies of The 2nd Edition of Police Precinct. You also get a private game session with the head of Common Man Games at the con (private meaning that YOU get to decide who is included in this session). Furthermore, you get ALL of the available Extras as follows...
5 MAD MEN CARDS
CROOKED LAWYERS
THE HEAT
ROCKET LAUNCHER
RIOTING GANGS
DIRTY BOMB

Fine Print: You must attend BGG Con to receive your prize.

PLAN B

In the unlikely event that Plan A is not possible, and you are the winner of this item, here is what you get...

We will ship you a copy of the 2nd Edition AND all the extras listed in Plan A. This will happen after we send all copies to the Kickstarter backers.
(Free shipping in US, first $15 international)
But wait there's more...
We will also send a copy of the game to your favorite US-based reviewer (provided that the reviewer has time to review the game. If they don't we can try your 2nd favorite, and so on).
(Free shipping of course)
But wait there's more...
Later, when we do the next printing of the game, we will send you a another copy. This time, you can have us send it to either you, a friend, a charity auction, another reviewer, or anyone you want!
(Free shipping in US, first $15 international)

blankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblankblank

A/B EQUITY: We have tried to balance these two options as best we can, such that if you win and don't get Plan A, that you are not too disappointed.

ALERT: If you bid on this item, and win, and Plan A does occur, you MUST be at BGG Con to get your prize. We will also allow you to have a friend pick it up for you if you so desire, but the game will not be shipped. That may seem harsh, but we want this to be a fun BGG Con moment, which is why we are doing it this way (we hope you understand).

Good luck!

OUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS OFFER

Our primary concern with this offering is that the backers of the 2nd Edition Kickstarter, who deserve royal treatment, will feel slighted because someone is getting a game ahead of them.

This is NOT the feeling we want them (YOU) to have.

Instead, our hope is that...

The backers of the 2nd Edition KS will be very happy to see a game that they made possible going to someone who is willing to contribute a great deal of money to an awesome charity!

So...

There you have it.

What we hope you think and what you actually think could be two different things.

The polls will likely give us a pretty good idea of where you stand.

If the vast majority of folks feel more toward the idea of...

"YES, this is a good idea and for a good cause, so let's do it!"

Then we will proceed.

If on the other hand, this idea tends to divide and upset our community, then we will likely NOT proceed and instead offer up a less interesting/unique/special item for the auction that will raise less money.

As you can likely guess, this is not what we're hoping to do, but...

We like to run CMG in a more democratic fashion that many game companies because we want YOU to feel like you are a real part of it.

One effect of this is that we don't always get exactly what we want.

cry

(meaning us here at CMG)

That's just the price we have to pay, but we would have it no other way, and in fact...

We like it that way!

So...

YOU have the power to sway this discussion through your vote and if you so choose, your comments too.

Thanks again for involving yourself in this.

THE FINAL VERDICT

We reserved this space to offer up the Official CMG stance on what will be done in this situation which is...

Still a bit too soon to say for sure!

(waiting for poll results, etc.)

But...

Early Indications point to us doing this (as the offer reads here in this thread).

We are tempted to just do it now, but out of concern to be sure that all who are potentially concerned with this topic have a decent opportunity to be heard, we are holding off.

Take a look at the positive/supportive comments over on the Kickstarter Update...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1529038443/police-preci...

AND, the same thing is happening here in this thread!

On the other hand, there are some who have voiced (through their votes) that they have reservations about this.

That being the case, we do not want to make a move so fast that some feel like they didn't have a chance to be heard.

Soooooooo....

It is possible (in fairness to all) that a final decision (and the associated action) will not occur today, but possibly later (likely tomorrow instead).

As always...

Stay Tuned!

UPDATE:

We feel like enough time has gone by now and enough feedback along with it, such that...

Yes!

This thing will be done, and asap today.

You can expect to see it go live soon.

Thanks to all who weighed in on this.

PS - at the moment that this decision was made we have heard nothing but encouragement, both here and on Kickstarter, with the exception of two votes against it (with no associated comments). I invite those two people to reach out to me privately and chat about this further if they wish. The poll will stay up so it is possible that results will shift over time.
Thanks again!

I'm not on the KS (because I already have the game), but my thought on it is this: We had a similar situation a couple of years back with our big charity dinner where Travis from Indie Boards & Cards generously donated copies of the then-unreleased Coup for our prize drawing at the event, a few days before the KS versions were shipping out to people. And there was one guy at the event, who happened to be a KS backer, who got a bit persnickety about the fact that some random person who probably didn't even know what Coup was got the game before he did. Came up and whinged about how that wasn't fair.

Ended up pulling this bloke away from the crowd and telling him "It's for a god damned CHARITY. Are you really so small a person to where it means that much to you that a couple of people supporting a non-profit are going to get what amounts to a TOY a few days before you will? Is this *really* something so big in your world that you need to throw a tantrum over it? Cause if it is, tell me now and I will personally give you back out of my own pocket every penny you spent this evening (keep in mind the event was over 90% over at that point) and escort you to the elevators, because an event about giving is not the place for you if that's the case". He didn't have a response for that, but he neither took my money nor left. Coulda been that he gained sudden perspective or just because it's Seattle and people here are so passive aggressive nobody knows how to deal with somebody who's direct.

We had a similar "potential" situation like that this year, where the Cards Against Humanity people had graciously given us copies of the 5th expansion before it was available, as well as a couple of other games. We didn't have any complainers. And that guy from the previous year was at the thing again, so I'm guessing he wasn't too offended at the discussion.

TLR: Anybody who gets their knickers in a wad over charitable giving is not somebody one should twist themselves into knots over trying to appease, IMO.

Story well told!

I am very happy to see a LOT of charity work being done in the gaming industry.

I bet that guy is a very good guy at heart that just lost his perspective for a moment!

And...

Glad he was back the next year.

We are blessed to have the time, money, friends and games to be able to enjoy ourselves and the company of each other.

Reaching out to those who cannot entertain the idea of such amusements because they are burdened with tragic life events, is a chance to really be a winner in life, keeping the thread of love and humanity strong.

Great!!!

At this point, YES we do plan to go in 2015 and share a booth with Jason from 8th Summit again.

We need to make the final determination next month. Assuming things go as planned, let me say...

See ya there!

and...

To anybody reading this, please join Stephen and CMG in Orlando Florida next summer (don't worry there's AC) for the next Dice Tower Con!

Done. I'm a little surprised someone actually voted No.

I understand you're trying to avoid stepping on toes, but it's not like you're selling copies of the game at BGGcon. You're donating them to a charity, and you're throwing in extras to make sure that the donation to the charity is maximized. Completely different situation.

I was surprised too, but...

I don't want to create an environment where folks feel like they can't speak honestly and openly about this (or anything) without risking being made to feel "Wrong", or "Guilty" or anything negative like that.

It is hard to argue against charity, but I want an open discussion, and with that maybe we can find the best possible way to do all this.

Based on the response so far, I assume we will go ahead with this as-is, but...

Let's see what additional feedback flows in, and maybe take action tomorrow.

Thanks for your supportive words Nathan!!!!
