Tried this for the first time a couple of week's ago we didnt have time for the full race and stopped after about 70% of the race. By that time thou the leader had taken and held the lead the entire race almost a full lap ahead of the pack. We played with the basic rules and there seemed like there was no catchup mechanisms at all, rather the opposite. Will there be a diffrence when playing the full/advanced rules?

Did you remember to do the Leader Check for lapping?
That's the catch up mechanism of the game.

I found the problem.

Play it some more. I've seen some awesome comebacks in this game.

In fact you played a "short" race.

In this case when you pay tyre points, you must use tyre chips ONLY (page 19).

In general, a leader pays a lot of tyre points.
In a "short" race, he cannot compensate with cards,
so he has to pit once more, or use unpowerful cards after few turns.
In the last case, other opponents are able to catch the leader with more ease.

Try this variant :

The game is faster with this variant.

Why would you even consider of suggesting a variant before they even learned the advanced rules??
