With my Daughter currently in College,
seeing the ads for this game Bannered across BGG (in heavy rotation yet!) makes me physically Ill
(and this from the guy who defended, and still does, the Tentacle Bento KS!!)

I get that the game is targeted at a different demographic than mine,
and I appreciate that they flat-out say:
Quote:
If you feel "weird" about the game's theme this game is probably NOT for you.
The Game has been marked as 18+ only because of its theme.
It contains no nudity. The artwork is limited to sexy outfits.

I even appreciate that the 'dancers' appear to be from both genders...

All well and Good.
I'm not challenging this games Right to Exist,
but that ad blazoned across the Geek here is crossing a serious line for me.

Truth To Tell?
I could probably tolerate the banner ad w/ 4 dancers, 2 male and 2 female,
If I had to...

But the ad with the (apparently) underwear-less schoolgirl with the 'spankin' ruler' ???

Nope, nope: can't do it.

I acknowledge that this is an irrational, and probably indefensible position,
but it is a visceral, parental issue, and this is a "family friendly" site, right?
And that Ad pops up literally 4 out of 5 clicks!

Yes, I could pay the adblock fee, but: Honestly?
I am more likely to avoid the geek until that ad is Gone,
one way or the other.

{Edit}
To further delineate my Position?
I'm actually kind of OK that any controversy (such as This) will likely aid the KS.
I really, Truly have no issue w/ this games existence.

Just That Ad.
YMMV

Yeah, No.

I'm open to discussion on the Appropriate Forum though.

Yup: You are Wrong.

I never said I was Offended:
I said I was Squicked.
I'm able to recognize the difference, too.

So far?
100% of commenters disagree with my position;
I admit I am surprised.

Your profile information indicates that you've been registered since 2006. That means you've been around long enough for all the Evony ads to appear and gradually disappear. There have been other fantasy ads with the femalesboobs of the species inviting you to 'play'. Did you complain then?

Or what of all the zombie/horror ads? Are these okay? Won't they give children nightmares? (Hell, I found them a tad scary.) Or what about ads glorifying train robberies showing female characters with deep decolletés?

The point being: I have more trouble with your inconsistency than with the site tiptoeing over the border of family friendliness from time to time. Also, the registration form indicates that you must be 13 years and older to use BGG, so children younger than that 'ought not' to view those in your opinion risqué ads to begin with. And, speaking as a parent of a nearly 2 y.o., while I'd consider the full explanation of what the images mean to a 13 or 14 y.o. a tad premature, I'd have no trouble once they are 15+. Kids gotta learn sometime, and best they learn it from their parents then from some schmarmy Internet discussion group.

Strictly your problem. No one else's business.

"Family friendly" is meaningless.
In any case, this site is 13+. Also, your daughter probably has seen a lot worse by now... Get over it.

If you look carefully, you can see the underwear in the cut of the skirt.

I dunno about that. If that were the case, I'd be allow to throw around cuss-words in my posts, but I'm not.

OP, just so you can feel like you're not totally alone: I'm with you (though less with the physically ill and more with the sneer of contempt on my part). The ad looks like an ad for a porn site. If I dug around for awhile on the internet, I could probably find a dozen exactly like it.

Well, I do want to clarify One major point of confusion:
My issue with this was never
"Won't someone please think of the Children..?!?!?"
But rather "Does anyone else notice the Squick?"

With 85% of responders disagreeing with my position,
I am moving my thoughts and exploration of the subject firmly to the RSP board
(the aforementioned the Appropriate Forum )

I'm with you. But: welcome to the club. Any time people on BGG can misunderstand a cultural critique so that they get to be the hero standing up to a fantasy "censor", many of them will-- even when there's no proposed censorship anywhere in sight.

It's exhausting.

Anyhow, yeah. I tend to be fascinated by gamers' games that try to talk about sex or relationships (even though the results are often terrible) and this one is actually hitting the "look how close we are to the line! look! look!" button pretty hard, despite in some ways seeming less designed to shock than some other games.

Yeah, people really fall all over themselves to characterize all criticism of sexual themes as overprotective, prudish nannying. It's as if they don't recognize a position more nuanced than "boobs on everything!" or "I put duct tape over my children's eyes".

You know, with all the mess that's going on in the video game industry, I'm surprised more people don't have a problem with this. If we want our hobby to be inviting to the general public, I don't think this sort of thing should be so prominently displayed on BGG. I don't have a problem with the game existing, but it's certainly not something that should be on every page. And I didn't know about it, because I got tired of my young son seeing all the other ads like this on BGG so I just disabled them all. That's a shame because I do enjoy seeing most of the ads BGG shows for games.

OMG - maybe the first time I have ever agreed with Chapel.
Bad grammar and spelling will be the death of the internet one day - mark my words!

And back on subject. However does a crudely drawn ad make someone physically sick? Methinks some exaggeration here perhaps. Following the same argument - are we going to ban every ad on TV that shows scantily dressed females selling cars or half naked males advertising after-shave? It's the 21st century, live with it.

I am in agreement with you. I really don't care if the game exist. I don't care if they advertise I think the side banner in question is a bit much. I kind of wish BGG would have rejected this ad and asked for another.

I am all for promoting your game no matter what the subject matter. I am not a prude but I think the individual in charge of advertising needs to really think about the community as a whole
