This morning, CNN is all over the story about Russians sending bombers to the Gulf of Mexico.

Have they ever seen the Gulf of Mexico? Bombing it might be an improvement.

Is it a Dr. Stranglove moment in Putin's cabinet? "We will cripple their ability to meet by bombing their shrimp boats!"

An article on the Gulf of Mexico flights says that Russia and Iran have just signed a new deal for up to six nuclear reactors.

Both sides poke the other sides defences far more frequently than most people know. Naturally, we only hear the one side.

QFT

Blofeld's quote about "the great powers flexing their military muscles like so many impotent beach-boys" fits well here.

Posts map of all the US oil drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Realizes the value of those particular strategic targets.

Time to do it again.

I was just a kid at the time, but I recall that part of the justification for invading was that Cuban crews were building a runway to support Soviet bombers.

It's educational. The Russians are just showing the US what it's like to have potential adversaries based in or patrolling your backyard...

Sounds like time to up the NORAD budget. It's only Putin playing the global game, but no response at all invites adventurism that can create opportunities for miscalculation or accidents.

Is this really a "General Wargames" topic? Is this just a "link of the day" kind of place? I don't see wargames in the thread anywhere.

The North Sea has fewer platforms and is a heck of a lot closer. Hit the refineries. Draw a line from Houston to New Orleans, you find half the US refinery capacity.

Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

A possible title for a Gulf of Mexico scenario:

Bears Over Beaumont (Tu-95 aircraft, huge oil production center in Texas)

Putin is a fascinating character.

Unfortunately, I'll probably be dead and buried 30 years from now when an accurate narrative illuminating this period of history can be written.

Alternatively:

"People are asking why we are spending so much money on the F-35 when our enemies are mostly armed with small arms and improvised explosives. Putin can you help us out on that?"

"No problem comrades. I'll just send a wing of bombers on a Caribbean tour to get everyone worried enough to sign a few cheques."
