Wow, this sounds like the love child of Imperial and Brass, and definitely on my radar for 2015/16!

As one new to the existence of this game, however, I was curious whether the name was also in a prototype stage, or has "Steam Ship Company" been decided upon for the final release?

Antike, Hamburgum, Navegador, Imperial, Concordia... these all carried rather pithy titles.

I know Marc Gerdts doesn't visit these pages too often, but some suggestions off the top of my head (after being aware of this game for about 7.6 minutes and googling "steam ship comapanies age of"):

1 Pacific Mail.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Mail_Steamship_Company

(Perhaps a bit too specific of a reference, and more mid 19th century than late, but has a nice ring to it).

2 Vanderbilt.

http://www.biography.com/people/cornelius-vanderbilt-9515195...

(Probably some legal reasons to avoid a direct reference to such a well known historical figure, but kind of cool nevertheless).

3 Commodore.

The sobriquet of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Probably less legal consequences using his nickname as a reference.

4 Transatlantic.

A bit boring, but less wordy than the current.

5 Something in a foreign tongue (like Navegador or Antike).

Speaking as a card carrying American, I'm less put off by foreign words than bland English language ones.

Anyhoo, just wanted to distill my excitement at a new Gerdts title into print. Can't wait to see this hit my table.

p.s. and if you ever do see this Mr. Gerdts, please make a game with an exploration mechanic in it again.. after this one, I mean (Navegador wetted my appetite for such in your designs).

I'm pretty sure that could change if they thought there's a better option, as the game is still being developed. And Mac is actually quite active in the forums - one thing which you may like is the fact he actually created a forum entry to get suggestions for his last game (which became Concordia):

help needed: name of the game?

Generic. Lacks flare. Very boring. Uninspired.

:/

What would that be in Svenska, by the way?

My first thought when reading this was "cool.. but how about Oceanic Merchants."

Then it hit me: Oceana

We'll split the credit.

I actually had no problem with the name because I honestly don't care. It's Gerdts+rondel+imperialism mechanic of shared ownership. But then I thought to myself of how many friends I have that would love this game that I couldn't convince to play a game called "Steam Ship Company."

My suggestion: Steamboat Venture

Edit: maybe not. There's a similar name in real life

I'm going to assume you know that would be a terrible name, because to English speakers, "steamer" has a very unpleasant slang meaning!

Lol, in French-speaking Canada, (precisely the province of Québec), a "steamé" is a Hot dog with the bread steam cooked.

To speakers of modern colloquial American English perhaps. To this speaker of The Queen's English... not so much (But then we have a type of ship called Tramp Steamer, which presumably would be completely unacceptable)

Steam ships would be ångbåtar in swedish, ångbåt in singular, where the first å is pronounced with a short o-sound like in offer and the second å longer like in french beau.

Guess we would get various suggestions of the pronounciation any how...concidering how it is with Navegador. Not sure it would be suitable ..but certainly fun.

Hands down my favorite suggestion in this list.

Unlikely to be adopted, but along a better track than most.

I don't think anyone has taken just "Age" yet.

Or "of"
