Will someone explain what makes the generals different than each other in the game? Is it just their respective areas of operation, or does each have some unique ability the others lack?

Do you have the game? If not, the short answer is it's a combination of their unique operating areas and each having different abilities.

Each operating area of course, has different geography, different opportunities for establishing Limited Supply Bases, and varied distances to travel. Also, Monty starts with 4 corps while Brad & Patton start with three. And finally, yes, each Commander has different special abilities.

If you have the game (and by your question I'm guessing you don't), you can find those abilities detailed on pg 13.

In addition, each general's corps start with a slightly different set of supplies (reflecting that generals emphasis) - Patton's has more fuel, Brad's have more food (and a higher level of supply, to compensate for his area's lack of supply points). Monty's corps have a "standard" set of one of each supply, but there are four of them vs. the other's three.

Oh, and one is more squeaky, one is more schlumpy, and one is much more British than the others.
