For a long period of time I've been playing a second campaign of "Silent War" Campaign 1. A recent encounter with Diligent Escorts goes a long way to showing why I am addicted to this game. (I love dice rolling games where tactics can be ruined or saved at crucial times; ASL is my favourite with Paul, my regular game opponent of many years).

The date is 1943 December Week One; it is War Period 3. USS Peto patrolling the South China Sea 2 runs into a High Task Force and attacks from C. The first pick is a Combat Event (CE) for which I roll a 9 - Combat/Combat; the next an M5t1 maru in C, then an M1t-2 maru in C, (BB40t which must be removed) then a Diligent Escort in D. Diving fails and the Diligent Escort lays patterns for a No Effect. For the first round of CE combat I attack the M5t1 TDC+0 and roll a 0-8, Sunk. No counter attack. For the second CE attack, I choose a Flag -3 which turns out to be a M8t3 -3 maru; roll 1-7, Sunk; no counter attack.

With 13t in the kitty, I decide to re-attack from B turning a DD 1/2 (radar flip), a Flag AO5t-2, a CL5t-4, CV10t-4, then another Diligent Escort. Once again the dive is not effective and the new Diligent Escort attacks, but also for No Effect. My best attack is against the AO5t-2 TDC -3 where I roll a 1-8, Sunk. The counterattack takes place at a 3+; I hold my breath and roll a 7 for Damaged dodging a bullet.

Three sinkings for 18t produces Super Skipper Dornin +1. (By the way this my third Super Skipper for this campaign; managed only one in the first playing of the campaign.

This was satisfying but no less thrilling than an episode in the first playing of the Campaign when one of my submarine ran foul of a Diligent Escort in D, survived, then slipped into B as for a re-attack and proceeded to pull 2 more Diligent Escorts in B and C. Both Diligent Escorts failed to score and no hit was possible because of the high escort factors but as it was a re-attack I couldn't withdraw and had to undergo counterattack at 7+. The resultant Red+ result saw me not surviving that one.

The Campaign continues slowly.
