Hello,

I need a suggestion for a game to buy to my sister as a gift.

She is not a big fan of board games but I recently managed to persuade her and her husband to play 7-wonders with me and my wife and she genuinely enjoyed it and since then we had quite a few 7-wonders sessions.

I am looking to buy her a game that:
- is relatively easy to learn.
- Doesn't take more than an hour to play (max). Ideally ~30 min games would be ideal.
- Has some strategic elements
- Can be played by at least 6 players and at the same time and also enjoyed with just 2 as well.
- She does not like fantasy themes unfortunately, so If I have alternatives I would avoid afantasy or sci-fi themed one.

Any suggestions ?

If I fail to to come up with something, I would just buy her 7 wonders, but I'd rather buy her something else as we already play this one when she visits me.

What is it that she likes so much about 7 wonders? With that information you get better results
Also what games did she reject and why?

The 6-player request will make this a hard request to fulfill. My recommendation is this:

Ginkgopolis

But it doesn't play six players; only 5.

Have a look at Bohnanza.

It's about Bean Farming, rather than civilization-building, and cards change hands via trading (this is the fun bit!), rather than passing them round in a circle.

Only caveat is that, although playable, the 2-player version is not nearly as good as playing with 3 or more (games that scale well from 2-6 are not too common!).

The obvious feature of 7 Wonders would lead to the obvious suggestion of Sushi Go! but I don't think that anyone who has exposure to just a single game is well served by "more of the same."

Perhaps you need to build more favorable game reactions before investing in a game as a gift. Or certainly more information from the recipient rather than more guessing by us.

She definitely liked the quick flow of the game and she liked the theme as well. I think she also enjoyed the fact that if was was based on cards and not a board. She did almost give up while learning it btw, but in the end she liked it!

She has not played many strategy board games in her life so it's hard to tell what she could like and she could not like.

Games that she disliked (either because I tried to teach them to her and she didn't fancy or because she has seen them in play are):
- Relic, Descent, Sid Meyer's civilization, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Small world, Risk. She found them taking too long or being too complex or the themes being "childish" on some of them.

For the past half-hour I've been reading about this game and I think I've got a winner!(I would still welcome more suggestions)

Thank you all for the suggestions so far

I need to warn you that Citadels is not at its best with 2 or 6 players. Bets with 4 or 5, OK with 3. Not so good with 2 or 6. With 2 players the game structure changes somewhat, and with 6 players, the game just takes too long.

Progress: Evolution of Technology has some very 7-Wonders-like elements, but only plays up to 5, and would be a bit long at that player count. As a 2 or 3 player game, I think it would be a good fit.

Carcassonne or Alhambra. They don't have much in common with 7 Wonders but they are excellent euro gateway games (which I think is what you are looking for). They are easy to learn and have some strategy.

Fairy Tale [uses] the same game mechanism (card drafting)...

+1 Fairy Tale (more streamlined and plays quicker than 7W...does not play with 6; however, it scales well from 2 to 5)

Others she might enjoy:

Lost Legacy: The Starship + Lost Legacy: Flying Garden (combining these 2 will play up to 6; either set can be played with 2)

Coup (can play with 2, but plays much better from 3 to 6)

Diamonds (scales fairly well from 2 to 6, but I think it plays better with 3+)

Coup is a good choice. It is real interesting at 2P but fits your criteria for player count and is easy to learn. Inexpensive as well.

Stone Age is an excellent gateway worker placement (I think everyone would have said Lords of Waterdeep but you said no fantasy) ...What about Yedo?

What about Ticket to Ride?

I think Diamonds is an excellent trick-taking game.

And Lost Legacy fits the bill too.

Citadels is actually quite good with 2. I know people who like it best with 2. So there's that. I do agree there's a downtime issue with 6+, however.

How about Among the Stars, very similar to 7 Wonders, but a little less fiddly

Umm..no.

Take a look at Innovation. It's similar to the tableau building of 7 Wonders, but it spans ~medieval to post modern. It's also much more interactive than 7 Wonders.

Base game plays up to 4. Each of the two expansions add another player, and some fun variety once you've got the hang of the base game.

It is a lot lighter than 7 Wonders, but you should seriously consider Rise of Augustus.

Similar theme, so that will not turn her away

Plays 2-6 in 30 min and does it well

Cool card combos like in 7W

The bingo mechanic is exciting and fun!

Give it serious consideration. For reals.
