Specifically games designed for only 2 players. My wife loves games with asymmetrical sides that are still balanced.

Current favorites are twilight struggle, claustrophobia, polis, and battle lore 2nd ed.

Not arguing the merits of whether or not they are truly balanced

Thanks guys!

We have Stronghold, but she didn't really love it the only time we played.

Netrunner I love personally, but she is not into the time commitment or deckbuilding

Mr. Jack Pocket. It's short and makes a great travel game.
If she's willing to do epic, the War of the Ring or Battle of the Five armies(a bit lighter).

Claustrophobia EDIT: Forgot it's a fave!
Earth Reborn
Kaosball: The Fantasy Sport of Total Domination
Krosmaster: Arena
Rivet Wars: Eastern Front
Space Hulk (fourth edition)
Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
Wiz-War (eighth edition)

Might be one or two not specifically designed for 2 players, but they work well with 2 regardless.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars, where you will be forced to drift aimlessly farther into the vast, empty abyss of space until a lack of food, water and oxygen causes you to succumb to Death's cold embrace.

I may be the minority but I did not enjoy 2 de Mayo at all. It's also somewhat costly right now as it's OOP.

Letters from Whitechapel is quite enjoyable. It's not strictly 2 player however to date I've only played it as such.

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is good times as well. I'm not sure if it's the deluxe version but LoTR TC is on sale from FFG right now in their holiday sale.

If you both like Star Wars, I recommend Star Wars: The Card Game. It is still partly deck building, but because the cards come in sets of 6 cards (i.e. you can only choose sets, not individual cards), I find it takes less time to build a proper deck.

Since you already like Twilight Struggle I'd suggest to try Washington's War.

It's such a great game. You got the asymmetry, a good amount of history, short play time and it's pretty easy to play. What's not to like?

Honestly, you are not REQUIRED to build decks or commit to buy more...
You can play just fine with the pre-built decks in the starter box.
It is still a great game.
Watch SU&SD's Netrunner special with her.

Summoner Wars
Mage Wars
Both great 2 player games.

Also, Star Trek: Fleet Captains
Memoir '44
Race for the Galaxy -- great game, for multiple players, but plays very well with just 2.

Hardly ever recommended, just because it's usually oversight or ignored

Neuroshima: Convoy !

Just take a look at it, I suppose you would give it a shot!

Yeah we like Hive, Jaipur, Morels. I think k2 sounds cool.

But these games aren't really assymetrical. I'm looking for games where the two sides play much differently.

Earth Reborn looks cool. Not sure my wife would dig the theme....

+1 for:

Letters from Whitechapel
War of the Ring

War of the Ring is my favourite game of all time. BUT - she'd have to really love Lord of the Rings, and it has a both a daunting ruleset (not super complex, but a modest number of fiddly rules especially around hunting the fellowship) and significant 3-5 hour playtime.

I've heard Hannibal is very good too.

The most asymmetrical two-player game I've ever played is Thud. Given that one player plays as dwarves and one as trolls with different allowable moves it's extremely asymmetrical. You need to play two rounds, swapping sides, in order to even things up. And there is, of course, Hnefatafl.

But I don't think they're the sort of games you're looking for??

Take a look at Sirlin Games, in particular Puzzle Strike (Third Edition) + Puzzle Strike Shadows (deck-builder with tons of interaction), Yomi (second edition) (feels like a fighting game), and Flash Duel: Second Edition (quick duelling game).

Innovation is also excellent. Because the cards are so uniquely different, it definitely has an asymmetric feel.

I suspect you'd really like Earth Reborn.
