Hi all, sharing a little pet project I've implemented this evening which generates a chart of games' ranks over time, presented using a logarithmic scale. By default it will show some popular games released this year which produces a pretty interesting graph:

http://geekdochart.com/

One interesting use case for me is comparing sequels to originals, King of New York is climbing very rapidly.

Another example would be all of the Alea big box games.

For those interested in the source code, I've also implemented an library in Go to communicate with the Geekdo API (though both need cleaning up and documenting):

This is very very cool, thanks for sharing.

I somehow find any kind of these statistics always extremly interesting to follow, even if I personally don't care much where a game is ranked, it's just somewhat fascinating to see how a game is received and what might influence it.

Edit: I e.g. checked some games that were released last year around Essen time and one of the most interesting things was the curve of Lewis and clark (http://geekdochart.com/boardgame/140620) where you yan basically tell the release date of the second printing almost to the day.

That's really cool, thanks. Would it be possible to add a search bar to add games without switching between BGG to lookup IDs?

Done The BGG search API returns results in a pretty random manner so games with short names can be a little finicky to find when it auto completes.

Hey guys, should be back up again now.

Apologies for the downtime, running on a small single core 512MB RAM box and it got saturated, will keep an eye on things and see if I can pick up why.

Got it now. It's awesome! I like this kinda stuff.

Of course I plugged in my favorite game, Seasons, first. It was pretty interesting. Between August 2013 and today, it has lingered right around 110, plus or minus 5-6 spots. I suppose that kind of consistency is a sign of a game with a strong fan-base, but it would be nice to see it crack the top 100 at some point. So close!

Thanks for doing this!

Out of curiosity, did you get permission to use "geekdo" in the URL or is that going to be trouble going forward?

Pete (is perhaps a bit oversensitive to IP issues)

Haven't gotten permission, but have no issue with changing it if it became an issue.

You're not receiving compensation for this, so I can't imagine it will be a problem.

As the database grows, there is a natural downwards trend for the rank of any given game. To compare the trajectories of one or more games to this baseline, it makes sense to add a handful of games that had already reached a steady state when the chart starts. I found that Tic-Tac-Toe (the lowest ranked game; Monopoly or Checkers could be substituted with little difference), Othello, Chess and Go are suitable. Above Go, the decreasing resolution makes further entries less useful; Tigris & Euphrates and Puerto Rico gives a fair indication.

This shows for example that Carcassonne is "stable" – it decreases in parallel with Go a little bit further down. Settlers of Catan on the other hand did so only until 2009; since that it has fallen at a greater rate and is clearly a has-been.

Similarly, comparing "Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame (2002)", " Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game (2010)" and "Clash of Cultures (2012)" shows that the first two are falling relatively to the norm, while the latter is rising.

An alternative exists that might also be of interest.

These BGG Blog links will bring you a program to show a graph of a game's historical path. The first may give you a better starting explanation. The second updates the program

This is indeed very cool. Too bad it doesn't go earlier into the early 2000's.

I didn't know Dominion was top 6 at its peak!

That's certainly interesting.

Thanks, I noticed the date and figured it would be something not as memorable.
