We thought about this after our first 3p game...when youre the last player you most of the time get useless cards, we found it a little harsh that you just discard the cards and cant do anything. How about a rule that you can discard one card for one gold once every morning phase?

Sounds like an interesting idea worth trying out but it might have some unintended game balance consequences.
Attack cards, craftsmen and ships become more valuable to people who don't want use them. It's hard to say how this would effect the game though.
I would be interested to hear how a game plays with this rule.

After a LONG 5 player game yesterday we came away thinking much the same. Instead of a one for one exchange we thought this might be better:
Discard two cards from hand and use two workers to get goods at current exchange rate
Discard all three cards in your hand to gain three gold.
This way, we thought, most players will have to discard at least one card that may otherwise be useful to them and only rarely would you have a hand of three cards that are so useless you'll chuck them away.
That did happen to one of our group yesterday, who basically just quit the game to try and speed it up for the rest of us, as he was getting nowhere. If we had these extra house rules he'd have been able to catch up a little bit and stay involved.
We want to combine this with simultaneous drafting too. Each player draws four cards and passes them round the table. Once each player has taken their third card the last in each draft is discarded. Should speed up the draft and still give each player a reasonable pick of cards (more than reasonable for the last player or two!).

Has anyone tried simultaneous drafting like Among the Stars? I would think this can alleviate the last player getting junk all of the time.
