I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for Settlers of Catan and noticed that a The Fishers of Catan expansion was released in a German magazine. Has anyone played this? Is it worth tracking down?

I have no idea, but I think it was in Spielbox.

And aren't these the same:

Yes.

Only if you're a completionist. I don't feel it adds anything to the gameplay.

It's best when played with the basic set. Not bad, but including it with the expansions doesn't really add anything.

The game has 38 ratings. Why does the rank display N/A?

I agree with Chris. I've played it, and it's fine, but not really necessary as it doesn't change the game much at all. It was released in Spielbox magazine, and you can order a copy by e-mailing barbara@nostheide.de, which is how I got my copy.

They've also got mini-expansions for other games like Carcassonne, St. Petersburg, Ticket to Ride, Shadows over Camelot, and War of the Ring, four of which I ordered, and they ship them together, which is nice.

I think this is the same as "The Great River" of Catan that shipped with the most recent issue of Games Quarterly.

I bought the mag for the expansion, but after reading the rules, it left me underwhelmed.

It sounds to me like a marketing ploy to sell more magazines.

It was also published with "Jeu sur un plateau", a French magazine (that's the version I have). I also have the expansion "The Great River", not the same thing at all.

I only need the base game! surprise

It's a nice expansion as it increases the value of costal settlements and cities, but you don't need this except you're a completionist.

This was also given away in the June 2006 edition of 'Jeux sur un Plateau' in France.

Great. Thanks for all of the input everybody.

and I am a BIT of a completist... but only if I can do it in a cost-effective way. I might look into ordering it.

Thanks again

Hi again,

I've been told that the version of Fishers of Catan that was released in the french magazine had to cut out manually. Is it the same with the german release? Or was it die-cut pieces?

Thanks again.
