Hello everyone! I've been playing X-Wing for a while now and have amassed a pretty decent Imperial fleet (my mate's been getting the Rebels). Anyway my FLGS is putting on a tournament on the 13th and I wanted some input into my options:

#1 ACADEMY SQUADRON: 8x Academy Pilot TIEs. 96 points, guaranteed initiative, more for comedy factor than anything else. I refuse to take Howlrunner because this is ACADEMY SQUADRON. "Dare to dream!"

#2: BLACK WHISPER: Whisper, VI, FCS, ACD, Recon Specialist; 4x Black Squadron TIEs

#3: ECHO FLIGHT: Echo w/VI, FCS, ACD, Recon Specialist; Howlrunner; Winged Gundark; Night Beast; Academy Pilot.

and finally

#4: V-FORCE: Darth Vader w/Cluster Missiles, Determination, Munitions Failsafe; Mauler Mithel; Dark Curse; Backstabber; Black Squadron w/VI.

I am personally leaning towards either ACADEMY SQUADRON (because I always said I'd take it to my first tournament) or V-FORCE.

The Phantom builds are pretty potent, especially ECHO FLIGHT, but I'd really like some input. Four options! It's a bit crazy trying to decide.

I know what you mean. I am by no means a veteran but with a grand total 4 tournaments under my belt (best placing a 7th....) - I know how you feel. I spend forever messing with the squad builder....

- Most important thing is field something you are comfortable flying.
- I try to avoid swarms because it is just too many dials and can drag out the turns
- Imperials can have a tough time against high PS Rebels but a list that has done OK for me is;

==========
High Nines
==========

100 points

Soontir Fel (35)
TIE Interceptor (27), Royal Guard TIE (0), Push the Limit (3), Stealth Device (3), Targeting Computer (2)

Mauler Mithel (21)
TIE Fighter (17), Veteran Instincts (1), Stealth Device (3)

Turr Phennir (29)
TIE Interceptor (25), Royal Guard TIE (0), Veteran Instincts (1), Stealth Device (3)

Academy Pilot (15)
TIE Fighter (12), Stealth Device (3)

Good luck with whatever you decide to field !

Black Whisper is a solid list that I've used to good effect several times. You could also downgrade to 3 Obsidian Squadrons with Howlrunner & Swarm Tactics.

Hrm, hrm. It is very tempting to use a Phantom. I'm just concerned about the likelihood of Fat Hans and Fat Rendars, and I think that more is better in X-Wing by and large.

That said I am not a hugely competitive player but I have had several victories with pure swarms, Phantom builds, and various Vader-led mini-swarms.

So. Er... Any more ideas?

Not sure why you feel that you need initiative...

Um, to shoot first with high PS ships? It's not really important with ACADEMY SQUADRON (those poor boobs are lucky if they've worked out what end of the simulator to get into, let alone how to read the flow of a space fighter battle), but with V-FORCE or either of the Phantom builds it's pretty important.

I enjoy flying Vader Squads.

In your example you could loose the Munitions Failsafe on Vader. He should be able to get a hit (almost) every time with his two actions the first time firing and after that the Failsafe is wasted points (ok, just one point).
That one point could be VI on Mauler to get your PS to 9/9/6/6/6.

My favorite Vader Squad:

Vader + Outmaneuver + Engine
Backstabber
Academy x4

or

Vader + Concussion + Outmaneuver + Engine
Howlrunner + Stealth
Obsidian x3

If you really want to go against the distilled wisdom of the X-Wing Scene, field "overpriced" Vader with "overpriced and useless" Expose laugh :

Vader + Expose + Stealth
(fill up with any of the combinations above + some ordnance on Vader - Proton Rockets?)

Enjoy your tournament and Fly Casual!

I like the idea of getting the V-Force pilot skills to 9,9,6,6,6. Equal skills are easier to fly in formation, and PS 9 is good against Phantoms and will help you to squeeze out one more shot against Han.

Practice flying with whatever you want to use. I frequently forget to use pilot skills, and that would really hurt in a tournament. With 4 different elite pilots, this can easily happen.

No need for comedy in tournament play. That's what I refer to. Don't waste points on this list.

Every need for comedy! Life is taken far too seriously, we are grown-ups that play with tiny spaceships we need to not take ourselves too seriously

Do you and your mate share upgrade cards?
If you go V-Force, or Black Whisper, then putting Draw Their Fire on one or two BSPs is worth considering.

I can actually fit Veteran Instincts into V-Force without changing Vader's loadout; bringing the squad to 100 points exactly. If Initiative isn't really an issue then I can do that, or I can drop Munitions Failsafe to get back down to 99 points.

I think having 9/9/6/6/6 for pilot skills is very tempting; it's relatively easy to manoeuvre and it'll be fun to fly Vader again (I've not done that since I got my first Interceptors).

On the other hand, 8 TIEs is very tempting...

Oops, didn't realize that your list was 99 points surprise

Normally I spent 100 points in all my lists not caring about initiative and I was assuming I have to get rid of something to squeeze something in.
But I also suggested to field Vader and equip him with Expose, so you schould be wary of my approach to squadbuilding.

I'm going to have to do some practice flights with V-FORCE and ACADEMY SQUADRON. I'll co-opt a friend to run some 100 point rebel/imperial lists and see how well I fare. My rebel lists will be poor though as I only have access to three X-Wings myself (although Wedge/Luke/Biggs can be pretty nasty).

Comedy? It's close to what won this year's French Nationals back in July:

4x Academy Pilot
4x Obsidian Squadron Pilot

There were 71 players, and Wave 4 was legal.

...vive la France indeed!

I wonder why the Obsidian Squadron TIEs? Surely the improved PS couldn't matter that much? Although I suppose they're shooting before Bandit Squadron, Rookies and Gold Squadron, aren't they...

Don't waste points on this list=don't waste 4 points for initiative with all academy. Wasn't saying the list is bad. Good try, mate.

What would you do with 8 TIEs and 4 points?

Ahhh but then it wouldn't be ACADEMY SQUADRON!

I'll have a few games in the week, see what I think. I might try the 4 Academy 4 Obsidian variant, or maybe just whack Howlrunner in as their Flight Instructor and fly the whole mob around the board in one big block:

AS-AS-AS
AS-HW-AS
AS----AS

Unfortunately you need 6 points not 4 to add Howlrunner in a 8 TIE Swarm.

I guess there are a lot of swarm players out there that curse the moment FFG decided against 102 points as the basis for squad building

For my part its 101 points that would be the sweet spot. I dont't know how many lists I came up with would have needed that on last point...shake

EDIT: But what about Black Squadron + Squadleader as EPT (If you want to spent the 4 points on a "squadleader")? Thats not the same offensive boost as Howlrunner, of course...

To be honest, if by taking Howlrunner I have to drop to 7 TIEs, I may as well take Obsidian Squadron: Howlrunner, Night Beast, Winged Gundark and 4 Obsidian TIEs... that's a significantly more potent schwarm.

A) Fires before Bandits, common to Fat Falcon lists

B) No bonus to Predator EPT, which is common among turret ships.

@Squad choices:
If you can fly a Phantom, that is the better decision.

Vader with Proton Rocket over Cluster is a better choice againt high armor ships.

You seem to be pro-mini-swarm, which is fine. Brush up on the anti-Falcon Tactics and the new Wave 5 counter tactics.

Personally, I am flying a Defender lately. And Outmaneuver vs Falcon is hilarious. It cancels C-3PO. However I am untested vs Outrider.

Face the facts that a first tournament is gonna shake up your nerves and challenge your rules understanding. Fly for fun and learning.

Like they say; fly casual.

I'm really up in the air. I think tonight is going to decide what I fly for certain. A few games with Brath, Whisper, and Academy Squadron to decide. I'm worried about Fat Hans but I don't think I should be particularly.
