I'm curious as to how much new geekgold is generated monthly and how much is redeemed monthly to BGG (not transfered among users). And what is the "M1" of geekgold; i.e., how much geekgold is out there? And how have all these numbers changed over time? (The sudden influx of gg during the "representative image goldrush" is well known, of course, but perhaps the new gg-denominated products like microbadges have soaked this all up?)

Can Aldie or one of the mods answer these questions? Thanks.

I did a quick google search on "M1 currency" and now I want to know more!

Thumis: it sounds like you must know a bit about economics. Could you give us an intro to M1 and other concepts? (I'm reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_supply ... I'm not sure I understand M0 vs M1. Does BGG have M0?)

It seems that BGG could be an excellent little sandbox to watch!

Oh dear lord! What's that on the horizon!?

It's fun to charter an accountant
And sail the wide accountancy,
To find, explore the funds offshore
And skirt the shoals of bankruptcy!

It can be manly in insurance.
We'll up your premium semi-annually.
It's all tax deductible.
We're fairly incorruptible,
We're sailing on the wide accountancy!

And so, they sailed off into the ledgers of history, one by one, the financial capitals of the world crumbling under the might of their business acumen,... or so it would have been... if certain modern theories concerning the shape of the world had not proved to be... disastrously wrong.

Uh oh... does this mean we have to revoke Sybot's geek license?

Well, I think the definitions are different for various countries, depending on how the national central bank releases information.

In the US, the Federal Reserve releases Money supply figures in 3 categories(although I think they stopped reporting M3, but some in congress objected). They don't report M0 on a weekly basis, just the other 3.

M0 - Physical US dollar currency ( coins and paper)

M1 - Physical currency plus checking accounts

M2 - Physical currency, checking, savings, money market accounts, low denomication CD (under 100k)

M3 - M2 plus high value CD's, Eurodollar accounts, institutional money funds

Since, BGG doesn't mint coins or print currency and GG can freely be given to any other user, I think we should classify all GG as M1.

Of course more important than total M1, is M1 per capita. Defining Per capita might not be so easy, since not all BGG users are active or active in the GG system.

Now, there might be GG in "dormant accounts"(BGG users that have GG and no longer log on). If these users never intend to come back then that GG should probably not be counted in M1, but since they could come back in the future it probably should be counted in M3.

So, what is next? GG loans? GG interest bearing accounts? GG options? GG Hedge Funds?

The FRB stopped reporting the M3 monetary stock series a several months back because it has become mostly irrelevant as a predictor if inflation, interest rates, and GDP growth.

A while back they added new monetary stock called MZM, which is probably the most-watched monetary aggregate these days.

Good old days that borgs cross the seas inside buildings...
I remember when they discovered that earth was plane.
and now for something completely different:
I'm a lumberjack and i'm ok,
i sleep all night and i work all day
He's a lumberjack and he's ok,
He's sleep's all night and he works all day...

I'd still be curious if the BGG "Federal Reserve" could tell us something about gg, both stocks and flows, over time.
