So tonight I had a practice game for my first tournament on Saturday against my friend. I learnt a lot... and made some terrible, terrible mistakes.

I took:

Whisper - Intelligence Agent, Fire Control System, Advanced Cloaking Device, Veteran Instincts
Howlrunner - Swarm Tactics, Stealth Device
Academy TIE
Academy TIE
Academy TIE
= 99 points

He took:

Lando with Nien Numb in a YT-1300
Bandit Squadron with Assault Missiles and Munitions Failsafe
Bandit Squadron with Assault Missiles and Munitions Failsafe
Bandit Squadron with Assault Missiles and Munitions Failsafe
= 99points

I did not like all those Assault Missiles. They were capable of totally destroying my Swarm in one round of shooting if things went well for him.

As a result, I panicked straight away and allowed his list to dominate. I didn't pay attention to what I was doing and failed to properly utilise Howlrunner or Whisper, and wasn't aggressive enough with focusing. I have bolded all the moments I think were errors.

I set up with my Swarm staggered on the right flank angled in towards the centre, and Whisper on the left angled in towards the centre again. He set up his Bandits and Lando on his left flank opposite my swarm, the Bandits closer to Whisper.

I pulled 3 Bank Starboards with my Swarm and a straight 4 with Whisper. The Swarm evaded and Whisper cloaked.

His ships came in at a steady straight 2, and then it was planning time again.

My Swarm 3 Banked Port, trying to avoid an asteroid, but (crucially) one of the Academy TIEs landed on it (arrrrgh - a mistake). Howlrunner and the TIEs took Evades hoping to avoid the Assault Missile storm. His Bandits and Lando moved forwards again, with Nien Numb giving one Bandit a Focus and the Bandits all Target Locking the TIE on the asteroid. Uh Oh.

Whisper came up, decloaked and ended up in range 1 of a Bandit Squadron... and then took an Evade action (!?!). The shooting stripped the shields off the Bandit, but with a Focus I'd've killed it straight up. I then forgot to give Whisper her free Focus. Then Howlrunner fired at Lando, knocking a shield off him, and using Swarm Tactics an Academy TIE fired at the shieldless Bandit and rolled badly. I started as I meant to go on and forgot to give him the re-roll from Howlrunner.

Lando shot at, and missed, Howlrunner. The first Bandit launched his Assault Missiles at the tokenless TIE and blew it to tiny little bits. Damn. One damage card on Howlrunnner, one damage card on the other two TIEs... d'oh!

RULES QUERY: Howlrunner is HIT by the effects of the Assault Missile and takes 1 Damage. Does her Stealth Device at this point fail? We ruled no, as the attack wasn't targeting her. Is this right?

The remaining TIE that hadn't fired shot at the shieldless Bandit and missed. He at least was just out of R1 from Howlrunner so I didn't have to make a mistake in not giving him a re-roll.

The Swarm Banked 2 Starboard while Whisper Hard 3 Starboard... bouncing into a Bandit (just) and losing her action. She then de-cloaked and took a shot at Lando, taking down a shield (I think) and moving her target lock to Lando - and forgetting again to give her the free Focus. Here as The TIEs had taken Evades instead of Focuses and did nothing in shooting, as I yet again failed to re-roll an attack die when within R1 of Howlrunner. Lando fired at Howlrunner and missed, and so did the Bandit that shot at her.

The Academy TIEs both took a Hard 3 Starboard and an Evade, although one crashed into Whisper and lost its action, while Howlrunner made a break for it away from the furball and tried to put an asteroid between her and Lando with a Hard 1 Port and another Evade. Whisper swung onto Lando's tail and opened up, but even with the Target Lock only managed to knock off another shield (and I again forgot to give her the free Focus). Lando shot at Howlrunner and missed, but the Bandit Squadron that hadn't K-Turned didn't. Down another Hull Point and bye bye Stealth Device...! The Bandits shot at the TIEs and critically damaged the tokenless one, reducing its agility by 1. The fire from the TIEs did nothing as far as I recall but may have dropped Lando's shields down by 1 again.

Lando ran into Howlrunner, losing his actions, while the Academies Hard 3 Starboard again to get on Lando's tail. Whisper 3 Banked Starboard and followed Lando, but couldn't decloak into a firing position. Two Bandits turned to follow the TIEs while the other one moved forwards 1 to keep Howlrunner in his sights. Howlrunner fired and put a damage card on Lando, then got blown out of the sky, as did one of the Academies. Now I was down to Whisper and a single TIE and I still hadn't shot anything down!

I can't remember much after that beyond my final catastrophic error in taking a K-Turn 4 with Whisper instead of a 3 Bank Starboard which would have kept me on Lando's tail and maybe seen me deliver a 5 shot volley with Focus and a TL. As it was I decloaked to get a shot at a Bandit Squadron, which I did, stripping its shields, but in return the unable to recloak (can't take free actions while stressed) Whisper was blown up by Lando. In the last shot of the game my surviving Academy TIE rolled two hits and my friend rolled two blanks and his Bandit Squadron that Whisper had just hit disintegrated.

I surrendered at that point.

Learning Points:

1) Whisper found it hard to get people in arc with her Straight 2 decloak. I prefer Echo's 2 Bank decloak. Taking Echo with Recon Specialist, FCS, VI and ACD suits me better, so I'll be doing that.

2) HOWLRUNNER GIVES YOU A RE-ROLL. HOWLRUNNER GIVES YOU A RE-ROLL. HOWLRUNNER GIVES YOU A RE-ROLL.

3) Don't let the enemy force composition threaten me. I should have picked on the Bandits properly, and been more aggressive in my movement. At R1 I would be avoiding Assault Missiles and rolling 3D in attack WITH A RE-ROLL FROM HOWLRUNNER.

4) Focus, Focus, FOCUS with the Phantoms. FOCUS. Especially if they're benefiting from a Target Lock.

5) Howlrunner with a Stealth Device should ALWAYS Evade, because 4 Defence Dice and an Evade is crazy hard to put hits past.

6) Practice more. I used to be much better at flying than I am, but that was when I was playing three or four games a week every week. Now I play maybe once a week after a good few months' of not playing at all and it shows. Oh god how it shows.

Stealth remains on, she was not "hit" as defined by the rules.

It sounds like you are de-cloaking after moving?

Yes. Have I misread? It's move - de-cloak - action ... isn't it?

wow

OK, that definitely alters things quite a bit, I've never de-cloaked before moving before.

That'll be interesting, got a tournament tomorrow and I'm taking Echo. Shouldn't be too much of a faff to get my head round though, I think. I hope.
