I'm working out the details now, but as it stands there is a 60% probability that I will be able to release a "Quest add-on package" for Shadows of Malice at GenCon 2015. If I can get it done in time, I would like to offer all BGG fans of Shadows of Malice the opportunity to get the package prior to its release.

When the time comes, I'll download the list of people who have become "fans" of the game on BGG. I'll offer them all the opportunity to get the package... hmmm... I have to figure out how to do it without it looking like spam.

Too cool. Any chance for a teaser as to how the quests will work? What kinds of quests will our characters be going on?

Hmmm... Okay...

Quests will be given by mystics. There will be at least three types: gatherer quests (e.g., "bring me a pretty flower from a swamp."), hunter quests (e.g., "bring me the heart of a mammal."), and seeker quests (e.g., "bring me scales from a reptilid with a blue ability."). Players will be able to choose the type of quest, but not the quest itself.

The more difficult the quest, the greater the reward. Rewards will be combinations of soulshards, potions, and new "epic" items.

How's that for a teaser?

Here's a sample quest card for you guys to weigh in on. This quest is the easiest kind: a "go get me something" quest:

Quests are assigned by mystics. When a quest is accepted, the player gets the quest card and a quest token from the mystic. The player puts the quest token on the leftmost number on the quest card (a 4 in this case). When the avatar reaches the destination terrain, it makes a LR against the target number covered by the quest token (4). If it succeeds, the item is obtained! If not, the player moves the token to the next number to the right and the avatar may try again on its next turn by making a new LR against the new target number (3), etc... eventually finding the item. Each "search attempt" is an action. But remember: LRs may be modified by invoking soulshards!

The cost of undertaking this particular quest? Time... for the Shadows to build... The benefit when the quest gets turned in? The avatar's choice of 2 soulshards of any 1 color of the avatar's choice (e.g., 2 blue shards) or 2 random potions (of potentially different colors)!

Of course, there will be several types of quests (Gatherer, Hunter, Seeker, Reaper are my working types) of varying levels of difficulty with rewards ranging from a few shards to "epic items." What is an "epic item"? Hmmm... I'm thinking about stuff like a tome that can banish a Guardian, or a ring that can steal abilities from creatures...

Whatcha think?

Sounds like an awesome addition. Can the Avatar try an LR at the same location multiple times, or would he need to move to another Hill location to try again?

I'm inclined to let them make additional LRs in the same hex.

Cool, that makes the most sense to me, as otherwise we would have to keep track which hexes we have searched, which seems needlessly fiddly. And you are still burning time searching, so it isn't like it doesn't come at a cost.
