My friend and I have only played Ascension: Apprentice Edition, and my friend wants to play more. Which one should we get, that is also reasonably priced?

My personal favourite is "Rise of Vigil" and "Darkness Unleashed" (the smaller expansion companion to RoV).

I know some consider them too swingy, and that can be true sometimes.

But I love them.

I second rise of vigil with the expansion. I have played the others but that was the only one that I purchased.

Look at Star Raalms. It's essentially sci fi Ascension 2.0

Having bought A:AE a couple of months ago, I also looked at the other games - at the time Immortal Heroes was not only recommended to me, but was one of the cheapest Ascension expansions available.

For me, it would be Storm of Souls. It feels like the cleanest of all the Ascension base sets to me, and the events add a fun twist to the game.

Definitely look into Star Realms. It is very reasonably priced and works quite similar to Ascension (but is very confrontational, which you might or might not like).

I merged Darkness Unleashed with Apprentice Edition, because I got DU for $15 and I'm cheap like that. That limits the potential of the energy shards quite a bit, but it still seems to work out half the time.

The best answer (to me, at least) is the iOS version - it is excellent, reasonably priced, cleans up after the game and allows you to try out the various blocks in combination or the massive mess that results if all of the blocks are mixed together.

In a physical form, I would agree with those who recommend the Ascension: Rise of Vigil/Ascension: Darkness Unleashed block. I really like the way the energy shards change the game.

Some folks have already mentioned Star Realms, and it is not a bad recommendation. If you find the art or theme in Ascension to be less interesting than some really nice science fiction artwork or if you want to be able to have some direct conflict with your opponents, Star Realms delivers. The underlying mechanisms are those you are already familiar with from playing Ascension and the entry cost ($15 list) is nice, too.

Yeah, I've looked into Star Realms. I actually like Ascensions artwork a lot better. But also, I don't see the similarities outside of them both being deckbuilders.

I ended up getting Rise of Vigil for him.

Ascension: Realms Unraveled is our favorite among the various flavors. It has a multi faction unite mechanic that is totally awesome!

Star Realm borrows quite heavily from Ascension.

Deckbuilding (of course, that one goes back to Dominion)
Random buying choices in a central row from a common deck
Fixed buying choice(s) to always have something cheap to buy
Cards that stay in the game, once played, and have a continuous effect
Buying and Fighting power as two economics, though in Star Realm the Fighting power is used against your opponents
Multiple "Factions" with a common theme and synergies within the factions

They play different, certainly, but at the core they are quite similar, really.
