Excerpt from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 46
The tense days before the Battle of Chibi (Red Cliffs) saw Zhou Yu worrying about the external enemy in Cao Cao and potential alliance rival in the form of Zhuge Liang. The latter had seen through his ploys time and again, raising the unease in him that Liu Bei, with Zhuge Liang's help, may soon become Wu's next big rival.
Zhou Yu therefore set a trap, requesting for help from Zhuge Liang with producing 100,000 arrows. He initially proposed a deadline of 10 days, but was taken aback by Zhuge Liang's offer to get it done in 3 days! To make sure Zhuge Liang could not back out, the promise was put down on paper, failing which Zhuge Liang risked execution.
As it turned out, Zhuge Liang had understood the weather patterns and figured out that heavy fog would prevail on the third night. He therefore borrowed 20 fast boats and planted rows of hay men along the sides of the boats. On the third night, he set sail for Cao Cao's naval camp. Approaching the camp, Zhuge Liang ordered his men to start drumming and hollering. Cao Cao, fearing an ambush in the heavy fog, ordered a continuous rain of arrows on the boats that they can hardly make out.
And that was how Zhuge Liang collected the 100,000 arrows he needed to fulfil his promise to Zhou Yu.
The launch of Three Kingdoms Redux on 20th November has seen us busy with packing to meet the initial orders. We had ordered custom-made carton boxes to ship out single copy orders and soon found ourselves taping carton boxes on a daily basis. As we were concerned about damage to the game during its long commute to USA or Europe, we triple-taped every edge of the box. That took up a lot of time but it was worth the effort, for many customers have given us feedback that the games arrived with nary a scratch.
Still, I can't help but wish I had the ingenuity of Zhuge Liang. If he is still alive, perhaps he can teach me how to produce 100 triple-taped carton boxes in one night?
