I thought Hammer of the Scots and Crusader Rex are based on the same system. But looking at the mechanics, they only match in two:

HotS Mechanics:
Secret Unit Deployment
Simultaneous Action Selection
Area-Impulse
Area Movement

CR Mechanics:
Secret Unit Deployment
Dice Rolling
Campaign/Battle Card Driven
Area Movement

Is that the case? Or is it just misrepresentaion of the mechanics here in BGG?

Misinterpretation. Both games have ALL those mechanics, the game play for both games is identical. If you learned one game the other would be a snap to pick up. The same goes for their Liberty game as well.

There is a LOT of difference in the maps, units and some special abilities which gives each game its unique flavour.

Peace
