I've always had a hard time describing this style. What's do y'all call it? I want to call it fantasy-realistism (in the vein of Boris Vallejo) that is a tongueful and kind of confusing I think. Its not 3D or super realistic, but its doesn't admit the artist hand nearly as strongly as other styles of illustration.

Here's a couple examples, from FFG.

Or just pick out any random modern MtG card...

Are you talking about style or genre? Much of the art you posted looks stylistically very different to me.

"Historical fiction" or "historical fantasy" might describe the genre.

My bad, I realized that the I deleted the "contrast" portion cause that was just confusing. The OP now only only includes images that match the style I'm trying to describe.

The others were also historical illustration, but they didn't attempt that style of realism that these versions do.

Would need more red and orange, boobs, and baby oil to be a Boris painting.

When I read this, I was pretty sure that "realistism" wasn't a word, but Google returns 79,500 results.

I know what you mean, it's the difference between the art in the video games EverQuest II and World of Warcraft. One is realistic, the other cartoonish. I don't know the names technical art terms though.

Haha! That was a total typo. But I like it. Realistism.
