Too Long Con

A 5-player game with all expansions to Kobol, Pegasus appears after first jump.

1.Karl "Helo" Agathon (jhsa, Admiral)
2.Tom Zarek (Juh)
3.Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Sat, CAG)
4.Felix Gaeta (Ant)
5.Lee Adama (alternate, me:a1bert, President)

My starting loyalty is a You Are a Cylon: Decrease Jump Preparation. And the starting Quorum Card is an Arrest Order. It's a bit soon to use that, but it's good to have.

Ready to Go

Game Begins

Helo wakes up stranded. With limited number of cards we manage 19 for Give in to Despair(14YG). Bait adds three raiders. A heavy raider is launched.

Zarek moves to Weapon's Control and shoots at the heavy raider with Strategic Planning from Starbuck and rolls a natural 8. Starbuck recalls fighters for Detente, the pursuit track is increased and a civilian ship is added.

Starbuck launches in an Assault Raptor, takes a wingman and escorts a civilian ship. Scouting for Water(9PR) totals 12 and we gain one food (at 9). Raiders move.

Gaeta moves to Command and escorts a civilian ship. Crash Landing(6PR) totals 8 with Iron Will, so nothing happens, but another heavy raider is launched.

It's my turn. Lee flies to Quorum Chamber, and I draw and play Assign Arbitrator on Helo and receive 2 politics cards. Food Shortage comes up when I just got good cards (Political Prowess). We just received extra food, so we lose one food (at 8) and 5 skill cards from me. Jump track is at -3 blue with Helo's turn coming up with Gaeta in the game. (Not the best situation for cylons.)

Helo appears in Hangar Deck. Helo goes to FTL Control and jumps the fleet, and rolls 5 with Strategic Planning from Starbuck, so no rerolls are needed. Helo takes us to Binary Star - 2 distance for 1 fuel, place civilian ship in front and back of Galactica. (EdNote: alternative destination is Barren Planet - 2 distance for 2 fuel.) Crippled Raider(10PB) would increase jump preparation. I can't help (and don't want to), but do not want to spike it with Political Prowess either. The check totals 12. A raider is added to CFB, and in a inconvenient sector, so Helo rerolls it to meet the other raiders. Jump track progresses twice.

Pegasus appears. Starbuck says that the game is going so well that at some point it is bound to start going worse.

Zarek XO's Gaeta in Command. A viper is launched and escorts the two civilian ships at the back of Galactica. Riots takes Food (at 7) and Morale (at 9). A basestar meets on the CFB and two civilian ships are added near the launch tubes.

Starbuck starts her turn in space. She flies to the front left sector, launches an unmanned, flies to the front of Galactica and escorts the civilian ship there. Mysterious Message(9YB) alternative brings in the CFB. Raiders move.

Gaeta moves to Main Batteries, and rolls a 7, taking away 4 raiders. Riots comes up, but Starbuck uses her OPG to handle it with Airlock Leak(6PB) totals 4, the check is passed with Declare Emergency. Gaeta uses Quick Thinking to take out a different Quick Thinking. Gaeta's Change of Plans allows everyone to draw two skill cards. Heavy raider moves and is ready to board.

I draw two Quorum cards with Critical Situation, then another two. Inspirational Speech is not needed yet, and as a cylon I of course would not like to play them. But I have Encourage Mutiny and some other cards that would be useful when I have some inklination of my Cylon buddy. Helo Pressures the Supply Ships and finds food (at 8) but reduces morale (at 8), then gets two treachery. Raiders shoot at unmanned viper, the second manages to take it out and three others move.

Gaeta tries to convince Helo to use a nuke. Helo moves to Command, XO's Zarek in Weapon's Control. Zarek shoots at a heavy raider, and Helo rerolls it. It still misses, so Zarek shoots again but misses again. Cylon Accusation(10YGP) threatens Helo with the brig, I play Trust Instincts. The check totals 19 before Trust Instincts is applied. It brings 6 positive, so the check passes, but a treachery card sends Helo to sickbay. Raiders shoot, and even with Evasive Maneuvers take out the unmanned viper which is protecting the civilian ship. One population is lost (at 11).

Zarek moves to Command and XO's Starbuck. Starbuck launches a wingman to protect his Assault Raptor, then escorts the final civilian ship. I and Zarek discard cards for Water Shortage, it seemed better at the time. Basestars shoot and hit Engine Room and Airlock. (Damn, I would've needed Airlock after sleeper.) The fleet jumps, and Helo takes us to Deep Space - 2 distance for 1 fuel (at 6) and 1 morale (at 7). (EdNote: alternative destination is Icy Moon - 1 distance for 1 fuel, may risk a raptor to gain food.)

Sleeper

My new loyalty card is Personal Goal: Sacrifice: 6 vipers dmged/destroyed,or fuel. So, hopefully fuel will be a critical resource at the end of the game.

Starbuck starts in space, lands his viper and moves to Hangar Deck, repairs two MKVII vipers, then launches back into space as his second action, takes a MKVII wingman using the CAG action, but there's nothing more. Declare Martial Law takes one population (at 10) and two cards from Helo. A basestar and a civilian ship appear.

Zarek flies to Weapon's Control and builds nuke. Strange Beacon(13PRB) is tanked. Gaeta plays in one card, then uses Quick Thinking to remove Exploit Weakness from the check. Jump track is at 0 already, the basestar launches two raiders.

Lee still "tries to draw Executive Order" in the receive skill step, but I then decide to XO Helo out of sickbay. Helo moves to Communications, and looks at the civilian ship, and instructs it to move towards Starbuck. I activate the Quorum Chamber, draw a Quorum Card, then play Inspirational Speech. Zarek plays Strategic Planning, and I of course succeed (morale at 8). (Damn, this game is not going well for me, and there is no sign of another cylon yet, so I could reassign Admiralty and/or CAG title.) Water Sabotaged(13YGP) takes one food (at 7).

Helo XO's Zarek in Command. The unmanned MKVII viper shoots at the raiders, taking out both. Zarek activates Command again, launches another viper, which then escorts the civilian ship. The Olympic Carrier(11YGR) comes up and Gaeta wonders who plays the long con this time. I joke that maybe I made a mistake and added no cylon cards into the loyalty deck. Everyone plays in two cards, I play negative to at least try. There are three negatives in the check, and the check totals 17 and pass. Helo plays 1-Scout for Force Their Hand. A heavy raider is launched. The negatives are one engineering and two tactics, and everyone in the game draws tactics. Well, well!

Zarek XO's Helo, who nukes the front sector. Starbuck plays Strategic Planning again (where does she get all those from?). Helo rolls 5 (+2), and thus takes out the basestar, but the heavy raider remains. Helo Launches Scout and verifies the next destination. Domestic Dispute(9YP) totals 7 (with 3 negative cards), and Zarek Declare Emergency to pass it.

Starbuck is still in space. She flies to front of Galactica, launches a viper, then shoots at the heavy raider using Maximum Firepower. The third shot takes out the heavy raider. Starbuck Reunites the Fleet(10YG) by exchanging two cards with two treachery cards. Two civilian ships appear.

Gaeta moves to Admiral's Quarters to brig the President, and Helo uses Assign Arbitrator to make it easier by 3. I pass, the president is president even in the brig. Starbuck plays in one, and Gaeta as well. The check totals 9, and Lee goes to the brig. The check also allows Gaeta to give Lee mutiny, and I thus discard two skill cards. (The mutiny card can't be played by the president, so I hope for another one before I escape the brig.) I choose to lose two food (at 5) for Food Shortage, because I have two good skill cards in hand which I don't want to discard. The cylon fleet catches up with the fleet and jump preparation is at -3 blue.

Lee starts his turn in the brig. There's nothing really useful in the Quorum Deck, so after a lot of thinking I draw a new Quorum Card.

Helo moves to FTL Control and jumps the fleet, again with Strategic Planning from Starbuck, and succeeds. Helo takes the fleet to A Civilian Convoy - 3 distance for 3 fuel, gain 1 population (at 11), and then loses 1 morale (at 7) to gain fuel (at 4). (EdNote: alternative destination is Barren Planet - 2 distance for 2 fuel.) Two more jumps are required. (But if I'm the only cylon like it seems to be, it starts to be desperate for me, because humans can jump early with Helo and Gaeta being humans.) Code Blue(12YGP) passes with 19 and Helo looks at my other loyalty card, seeing the Personal Goal - Sacrifice: 6 vipers damaged/destroyed, or lose fuel at the end of the game. A heavy raider meets with the cylon fleet and a civilian ship appears.

Zarek activates Command to launch a viper and escorts a civilian ship. Hybrid in Panic(12PB) pass effect allows jump track to go forward. (Not good for me.) Starbuck needs to pass, Gaeta plays two, I put in one from the brig. Helo passes, Zarek plays a card. The check comes up with three negative cards and Iron Will. The check totals negative, so one morale is lost (at 6), then one fuel is lost from the fail effect (at 3). The check raises some questions. I know that the three negatives are from destiny and from me, so Gaeta and Zarek simply played in too small cards and Iron Will was probably from one of them. I only played one card into the check, so I try to sow some suspicion although by now I'm fairly certain there is not another cylon in play. (And I can't help it, because Airlock is broken. I could otherwise Political Prowess someone out of Airlock and maybe get a cylon buddy.)

Starbuck is still in space. A viper is launched, Starbuck escorts the ship from the front of Galactica, and Launches Scout, and buries the crisis (Build Cylon Detector). Tracked by Radiation brings in a basestar and raiders, 2 civilian ships appear and then the basestar shoots and misses.

Gaeta flies to Engine Room and repairs it. Helo performs Interrogation gently and discards cards with Gaeta. Basestar shoots and misses.

I decide to make a final gamble and from the brig XO Zarek in Command. Zarek escorts the civilian ships from the back of Galactica. I then activate the brig check. Helo plays one and I do too. The check totals 9, and I move to Admiral's Quarters, and get a crisis (which was Helo's intent). Threat of Super Nova(10GRB) comes up with 10 positive and 7 negative. I damage a viper using Dogfight (with the guise of needing damaged vipers), then one population is lost (at 10). Basestar hits Pegasus CIC, and Weapon's Control gets damaged.

Helo jumps the fleet from FTL Control and succeeds. He takes the fleet to Tylium Planet - 1 distance for 1 fuel and risks a raptor and gains 2 fuel (at 4). (EdNote: alternative destination is Algae Planet - 1 distance for 1 fuel and get 1 food.) Temple of the Five(9PB) fail is a no-op again because jump track is at the beginning. (The game just turned from bad to worse for me.) Basestar with supporting ships appear in front of Galactica and two civilian ships are added.

Zarek XO's Helo, who launches a nuke. It takes out the basestar only, so he spends the other nuke, but it has no effect. I play two cards to cause commotion in Joe's Bar(12YGB). The check totals -3, a civilian ship is added, one morale is lost (at 5), and Zarek goes to the brig. Raiders miss Starbuck with two Evasive Maneuvers.

Starbuck shoots at the raiders with Maximum Firepower, but only hits one. She launches a viper, the takes anoter pass at the raiders with Maximum Firepower, only hitting once! Haunted by the Past(12YG) totals 16, two treachery are added to the destiny deck. The CAG title comes to Lee.

Gaeta plays Preventative Policy on Morale, feeds cards into Engine Room. The Passage(14PRB) goes into skill check. I play big yellow, the check fails. Three population are lost due to two civilian ships being destroyed. Raiders shoot at Starbuck, but miss with the help of one Evasive Maneuvers. Jump preparation is at -3 blue.

So, I put Helo into the brig, the Admiralty goes to Gaeta. A Desperate Pact(15YGR) goes to skill check (the alternative would be to throw myself into the brig). The check fails with 5 positive, I use Dogfight to damage a viper. Dradis Contact adds two raiders. Morale drops to 4, and presidency goes to Zarek. Zarek looks at the Quorum Hand, making no comments. Raiders shoot at Starbuck, and the first shot destroys the Assault Raptor.

Helo XO's Gaeta to jump. The fleet jumps with Strategic Planning. Gaeta rerolls, but fails again. (EdNote: Helo could still reroll it.) Oh well, there is 4 population left. The game is over.

Both Helo and Gaeta have plain You Are Not a Cylon cards. One food is lost (at 4) due to Zarek's Personal Goal - Political Intrigue: President is in the Brig, one morale (at 3) from his other PG - Devastation: no nukes left. One fuel is lost (at 3) from Lee's Personal Goal - Sacrifice: 6 vipers damaged/destroyed. Lee's other loyalty card is of course the cylon card.

Human Win (jhsa, Juh, Sat, Ant)
End Resources: Fuel 3, Food 4, Morale 3, Population 4, 6 vipers damaged, Assault Raptor destroyed
One pre-sleeper cylon (a1bert)
Game Length: 100 minutes

Played Crisis (29):
Give in to Despair(14YG), Detente, Scouting for Water(9PR), Crash Landing(6PR), Food Shortage, Crippled Raider(10PB), Riots, Mysterious Message(9YB), (Riots), Airlock Leak(6PB), Pressure the Supply Ships, Cylon Accusation(10YGP), Water Shortage, Declare Martial Law, Strange Beacon(13PRB), Water Sabotaged(13YGP), The Olympic Carrier(11YGR), Domestic Dispute(9YP), Reunite the Fleet(10YG), Food Shortage, Code Blue(12YGP), Hybrid in Panic(12PB), (Build Cylon Detector), Tracked by Radiation, Interrogation, Threat of Super Nova(10GRB), Temple of the Five(9PB), Joe's Bar(12YGB), Haunted by the Past(12YG), The Passage(14PRB), A Desperate Pact(15YGR)

Final Thoughts

On hind-sight I should've revealed early instead of waiting for a partner. Grabbing power was a preconceived notion that did not come together in this game, and a quick strategy change would've been better. I still had Political Prowess in my hand at the end of the game. Getting a Critical Situation would've allowed me to brig two players on one turn.

The humans were extremely efficient due to Starbuck's two actions, Gaeta's FTL reroll and (almost) always having jump possibility on Helo's turn (for his reroll). (I even helped that by getting out of the brig. A thing I did not think of at the time.) The end of the game came just too quickly, with no critical resources that I could exploit even if I had revealed a few turns earlier.

So, something to beware in the future. On the other hand, it was my first Cylon loss since I started logging plays at the beginning of 2013, and we need more human wins after a long stretch of cylon wins, so I'm happy for that.

Interesting session report, as always. I believe that Personal Goals belonging to unrevealed Cylons are not resolved, so Fuel was really at 4.

There are only human players and cylon players (and cylon leaders), there are no unrevealed cylons in the rules. (Although the PG really did not matter in this case.)

I looked at the rules again, and I'd say you're right. Unrevealed PG's belonging to revealed Cylon players have no effect, but unrevealed Cylons should count as human.

Rules nitpick: reading the card text, I don't think you can do that, not even to pick up a different Quick Thinking.

In addition, you definitely cannot pick up Exploit Weakness (strength 5) with Quick Thinking.

Ah, yes, it explicitly says "a Quick Thinking" instead of "the Quick Thinking". I think it implies that all Quick Thinkings are resolved at the same time, with their single effect.
