Curiosity has discovered organic matter on Mars
Molecules found by Curiosity on Mars have been confirmed as organic matter -- the building blocks of all known forms of terrestrial life.

Not life, but precursors. Pretty cool.

It seems very likely to me that microbes have travelled to and from Mars and Earth via asteroids. But if we find Mars life and it's radically different from Earth life (no DNA etc) then that will be something.

It probably came from a dead cat. And I think the rover ran it over.

I remember an old sci fi story (from Bradbury?) where the US launches a missle at Mars as a nuclear weapons test. It happens to unknowingly wipe out the last remaining Martian city.

The ending/punchline goes something like:

He said, "Don't worry about the nuclear blast. There's no life on Mars."

And he was right.

"Organic" as is "organic chemistry", but not, say, nucleotides. Those would have been something. Chlorobenzene's a bit less exciting.

True-
But given that just a year ago, the majority view was that there wasn't even that on Mars, giving little room for any hypothesis that was ever any life on Mars.

The jury is still out, but the hypothesis that life might have existed eons ago just got pulled back from being thrown into the dustbin.

Interesting, but not really proof of life.

Not even necessarily evidence of life, but definitely worth further investigation.

ON the whole I would rather Titan was the focus.

Or Europa, but I guess it's a lot easier to get to Mars, and easier to get funding for Mars.

But also less likely are you to find life I think.

The danger is if we go looking for life on Mars and fail to find it it may scupper plans to look for life where there is a better chance of finding it.
