My wife an I enjoy playing games almost every night, but boy are we in a rut. Games we enjoy are Yahtzee, Scrabble, Rummy, Flinch and Phase 10. We recently bought Word Yahtzee and Oogle but dislike both of them. Any thought on two player games that may fit our taste. We are not deep thinkers, as in we don't play chess or bridge. Just simpler games to pass the time.

From the kind of game you seem to enjoy, I would recommend games like Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age or King of Tokyo that are using Yahtzee mechanism or maybe something like Qwirkle if you like Scrabble and wanna go out from your comfort zone! Happy gaming!

How about Rummikub or something like Lost Cities? There is also Boggle if you like word games.

If you wanted to really expand your horizons, then try Innovation. There is more thought in this game but my wife and I love it.

I think you'd enjoy all of these. Some are for 2 players only. The others can be played with more than two but work beautifully with just two. (I assume you know that if you click on one of these "blue" games on this list it will take you to the game page.)

Carcassonne - a game of building cities and roads with tiles
Ingenious - a little like dominoes - matching colors
Qwirkle - also sort of like dominoes, but different from the other one
Cartagena - I have the version from 2000. I think you might find only the newer version for sale nowadays
Spot it! - inexpensive, comes in many varieties, will have you laughing
Take it Easy! - a puzzle-like game
Bananagrams - uses Scrabble tiles, but easier
Quiddler - another word making game, this one with cards

You may find some of these games in regular stores. For others you'll need to go to a games store or buy them from an online store. You could use Amazon or one of the specialized games stores like Cool Stuff Inc. or Miniature Market.

To compare prices among the online stores, first go to BoardGamePrices.com.

Both are quick card games that seem like they would work well to expand the games you currently enjoy.

Lost Cities

But my best suggestion is to check out each game here on BGG and check out the video section for each game that takes your interest. Watch some overviews/play throughs with your wife and see what takes your fancy.

My current favourite 2 player is Regnum Angelica.

This isn't a 'can be played as 2 player' game, it's an actual 2 player game, and has a depth I didn't expect when I first started playing.

Beware that King of Tokyo sucks as a 2 player game.

Chalk up another vote for Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age! I do not own but have played. It is amazing and if you like Yahtzee you will fit right in naturally with this game. I love how they offer more choices and you don't really get stuck with a roll that you cannot use as you do in Yahtzee near the end of games. It is kind of brilliant actually and there are lots of more complex games that I would put on your list if you love this mechanic and want to grow into deeper games, like The Castles of Burgundy and Bora Bora. But for now, I would start with Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age.

Since you also like word games, I would also highly recommend checking out Paperback. It is available over here at this website. What is wonderful about this little game is that it can also be played as a cooperative game to change things up a little bit. You can view the coop gameplay here.

Later, when you want to continue to grow your hobby, I would highly recommend checking out this video. I do a lot of research before I buy a game, and while I don't always agree with Rahdo, he is almost always spot on with his recommendations for me and my wife because he focuses on runthroughs for games that he can enjoy with his wife. They don't like killing/destroying each other in a game and every game he keeps/recommends in his final thoughts play wonderfully with 2 player.

Sorry if all that overwhelms you, I just like putting the information out there so you can make your own decision. Based on your interests, you will not go wrong with Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age or Paperback.

EDIT: We are excited and awaiting in suspense to hear what you choose! I've subscribed to this thread also, so feel free to keep asking questions here, or you can PM me if you have any other questions or keep asking them anywhere on this great website actually. This community is awesome! Welcome to the website and we hope you enjoy!

Battle Line would be my top recommendation. I honestly can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Next to that some games I think you would enjoy most are:
Haggis
Linko!
Lost Cities - This may be harder to find right now.
