Don't know the whole story, but there was a commercially produced version of Tanbo named Rootbound in 1993. Game in a tube with roll up boards of different sizes and plastic men. Mark Steere is listed as the creator. The name "Rootbound" was evidently trademarked.

I originally named the game Rootbound but later thought that sounded too commercial and decided to rename it. Tanbo means rice paddy in Japanese. I also renamed Locus Games to Mark Steere Games.
