The title sums it up well. We got this, but don't have the original expansion that discusses and gives the components needed to use the basement/attic alternate board. Which would we need? Thanks!

I believe you are looking for either 2nd Story or Extreme Danger.

Extreme Danger is the one that comes with another attic/basement board and the tile for marking the location of the stairs.

This is correct. It also has the "broken floor" counters. Portable ladders and "open Window" counters are included in both ED and 2nd Story.
While basement and attic have been designed for the ED/2nd Story board layout, is is possible to add them to other maps, like the bungalow-style houses of the base game. Doesn't look quite as satisfying from an architectural point of view, but works quite well otherwise.

The rules and pieces required are contained in Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Extreme Danger, but it is also compatible with Flash Point: Fire Rescue – 2nd Story. Rules are available here, especially if you wish to use the Attic/Basement board without acquiring Extreme Danger, though you will need a d12, and substitutes for a few markers.
