Was and were are used just the same? Nothing is more correct for a thing like this?
"Was" is for the singular, "were" is for the plural. they are both past tense of the verb "to be" - equivalent to present tense "is" and "are". They can be confusing because in English "to be" is used to create the imperfect tense ("he was playing a game of Dungeon Lords when he discovered he had the wrong combat board.") but the singular/plural rule still holds.
