What would they be? I'm guessing I'll have room for about 4 big-box games to bring back from Essen (maybe 5 if I stretch it), so what should they be? I'm thinking of stuff that will be harder to get here or arriving sometime in the next year in the US. Right now I'm leaning towards the following:

- Ysphan (the rules read pretty good and seems interesting)
- Perikles (it's a Martin Wallace)
- Hameln (I pre-ordered this so it's a given)
- Italia (limited production?)

Any other suggestions and why?

Interesting question. A lot of the high profile titles are going to make it to the United States eventually (of course, we are still waiting on the translations of some of the Nuremburg games). Therefore, I would pass on Yspahan and Perikles, as it looks like they will be out in the United States pretty quickly (he said knocking on wood). The Civ Card Game (I think it may now be called Through the Ages) looks good and, with only 500 English language copies at Essen, it will be harder to get than a lot of other titles. The Spielbox issue with the Thurn and Taxis expansion is another thing I would pick up. Both of these have the virtue of being small. I have to confess to being intrigued with the Alhambra Dice Game, but that's just me - a very portable game with some depth is always a good thing, and there is some promise with this title (at least the advance info I have seen). If I could get my hands on the Notre Dame (Alea) prototype, that would be something I would be very interested in smuggling acquiring.

You could also look at the games that are not readily available in the United States, like Nacht der Magier.

Anyhow, enjoy your trip! We'll be looking at the updates and drooling, while we wait to see things in person at BGG.Con!

In alphabetical order, my buy list for Essen:

1861
Age of Steam Expansion: 20,000 Rails Under the Sea
Quietville
Fiji
Factory Fun
Guru
Imperial
Kaivai Expansion
Null & Nichtig

I realise that this is more than 4 games, however several are small card games or (in one case) a small expansion that could easily fit in the airspace of larger boxes.

I've played it several dozen times now for various games. Ted keeps bringing it to game nights. It is highly irritating -- especially when we have a player who actually satisfies the start player rule for The Bridges of Shangri-La.

4 ??? Just 4 ??? How is possible to go to Essen and take just 4 games ??? I make the travel by car or camper (instead of airplane) from Italy all the years to have enough space for games and you told me just 4! shake

I'll take for sure:

- Hermagor (I have playtested and I like it)
- Throught the Ages (booked)
- Graenland (booked)
- Legio (booked)
- Tempus
- Perikles
- Imperial
- Marvel Heroes
- Furchterliche Feinde
- Factory Fun
- Space Dealer
- Italia

and are 12 the games I'm sure to take! And than in my wish list there are many others.

If I could take only 4 probably I'll consider to take only the games that I know it will be difficult to find elsewhere ... so probably I'll go for

- Through the Ages
- Space Dealer
- Facroty Fun
- Graenland

... good play!

Some games that have caught my interest (Reef Encounters of the Second Kind, Fowl Play, Hameln) are already sold out, so I won't include them on this list. Other games that I'd like are:

* Experiment -- An interesting game from a small publisher
* Khronos -- Another interesting game from a small publisher.
* Factory Fun -- A Cwali game (whose title indicates it should have been a 2F game).
* Graenaland -- A Czech game that is difficult to obtain outside of Europe.

Best wishes, and have a great trip!

For me Essen is always an opportunity to pick up some imported games which are usually not on stock in the FLGS ( ...in Germany, that is ) So my choice would most likely be:

Europe Engulfed (if reprinted by then)
Federation Commander Romulan border
Silent War
FFG's Marvel Heroes (if out by then)

Only 4? Uh-oh- my preorders have filled those already, but I'd say:

Through the Ages
Perikles
Fowl Play
San Marco (because my wife demands it)

Sure would save me some money....

King of Chicago just caught my eye. I saw this last year in prototype form and it looks like they've gone to press with production copies for this year's Essen. I may have to make room for that one.

I do have a whole slew of expansions and small games on my list to pick up that will fit in other nooks and crannies like:

TtR:1910
Reef Encounters of the 2nd Kind
Himalaya 5-6 player expansion
Thurn & Taxis magazine expansion
Bohnkick (which wasn't out at last year's Essen)

Maybe I'll take Aldie's advice after all and buy another suitcase while I'm therelaugh

I hope you're taking two empty suitcases with you! I can't imagine going to Essen with the intention of only buying 4 significantly-sized games!

You might want to hold off on stuff like TtR: 1910 which you'll be able to pick up (probably cheaper) in the States. Even though it's little and doesn't seem like it adds much weight, that little stuff adds up fast.

I'm not too familiar with all the games coming out, but I'd probably get gheos, Leonardo, and maybe Kronos... so far those are the ones that look most interesting.

Four??! I have about 35 interesting-looking games on this list already (not all are must buys, though): http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/16483

If I could only have four, it would be a mix between hard-to-get-yet-interesting looking games and games that just seem exciting, regardless of later availability. For now, how about

- Taluva
- Italia
- Graenaland
- Die Baumeister von Arkadia

Ask me again tomorrow, and I will probably reply differently.
