I think Splendor was pretty over-rated. I mean, it's good and the pieces are nice, but it's not that great.

So, I generally back away from these types of topics, but I feel I should at least impart some advice:

List your evaluative criteria. Otherwise, your "overhyped games" list will just be a list of the most popular games.

For example, you list Dead of Winter as the most overhyped game. But it is popular for a reason, a TON of people like it. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is overhyped.

How does one become over hyped if not liked by many?

Duke Nukem was hyped as the nex big thing in video gaming and then was vapor ware for a decade. Hype is just buzz, not actual opinions.

Hype and buzz are two different words. I think hype can include opinions.

Just for clarification, I didn't list Dead of Winter. I just made the geek list.

Hype has yo do with people forming opinions badefbon previews and other marketing, spreading those opinions, posting things like "This game is gonna be awesome!" This drives curiosity, which in turn drives marketing, which in turn drives sales.

Then the game comes out and it sucks.

My first run in with hype/over hype was Daikatana. Everyone was all like, how can this game go wrong? It'd made by John Romero! I can't wait!

Then it came out and sucked.

Thank god for over hyped games! Anything to keep spreading the word that there are more/better games out there than what your typical person even knows about.

If Splendor gets people to try new different type of game, I'm all for it.

I agree. I bought it based on the hype even though it didn't appear to be anything special. I've played it a couple of times but I really don't get the appeal that had everyone GUSHING over this game.

Other than pointing out that the word doesn't mean what you claimed it did? Fine, you win.

I'm gonna put my vote out there for scythe. For a game without even a fleshed out prototype, its ridiculous the coverage its getting.
