This will be a general session report for 4 different games that I ran within the past couple months. All three games were played with first time players and thus had similar experiences. They also had experience levels ranging from relatively new to gaming to pretty hard core gamers. They were a 2, 3, and 4 player game, with the 2 player having the most novice game of the group. These games were played with member of the Santa Cruz Gamers Association and Death by Adventure.

All except one game were played strictly vanilla. The exception was a 4 player group from Death by Adventure. They love Co-op games that will kill them horribly, in that group we played with the alternate general and the elite minions.

In every case they had all played some similar games such as Pandemic, as such it was very easy to teach them the rules. This game was easy to learn and just start playing right away after a short rules breakdown which everyone liked.

In each game everyone immediately started off to get their first quest done, and usually then their second and possibly third. some players needed reminding that they had to do more than just work on their personal quests the whole time!! In most games we worked together to quickly set up a good portal network which greatly aided movement.

We were always able to kill at least one general about midway through the game. However that is when things usually went pear shaped. In one game we got three generals killed; and in another we almost killed generals twice but were one or two wounds short before they healed up all the way again. All the games ended in horrible defeat for the land via either taint or running out of minions.

without exception everyone thought it was a great game and wanted to play again. They loved the ease of play, theme, difficulty, and how it seems to lull you into a false sense of security and then wipes the floor with you. right after finishing the game the groups would all start talking about what went wrong and how they might have been able to salvage the situation.

Thanks for defending the realm and sharing the results. Hope your players get a win next time, but mostly I wish them a great adventure.
