I'm looking for an introductory small scale hex and counter wargame where each counter is a single soldier, vehicle etc.

basic requirements are
no zombies, behemoths, monsters or aliens. strictly realistic.
no minis, just counters.
small size map and quick to play, simple rules. Hard to find so flexible here.
two player or solo would be great.

Scenarios included in the game.

your experience is valued.

Combat Commander hits everything except the counters represent several soldiers, but if you can get past this it hits everything else. Most scenarios have enough counters to represent usually in the 15-25 soldiers per side, though some are larger or smaller scenarios. I really enjoy playing it solo, but two player is best.

Trenchfoot I believe hits all of your requirements, though I haven't played it.

Also Ambush might be right up your alley, hits all of the above except it is only solo - but many people love the game.

Sniper! (second edition) (or Sniper! (first edition) and Patrol!) sound like they would fit your bill nicely. There's also Firepower, which I would say is a little more complex, but should be manageable if you've gotten some other wargames under your belt.

I have firepower and ambush and several lock n load, but I'm looking for an intro game to show some non wargamers what it's all about.

combat commander seems like a bit of a handful for newbies as they need to be able to learn the game on their own, without being overwhelmed by rules.

Check out Minden games - especially their Nam games. One counter == one soldier; as tactical as things get. They are simple to learn, simple to play, and a good deal of fun teaching a budding wargamer movement and AF/DF.

Oh, I think the new Combat Leader falls into this camp.

This one should do nicely - easy to learn, downloadable PNP, very inexpensive.

This game represents one counter one man in a modern day Middle East conflict. It is a good game with some fun missions.

This is a rare example of a low complexity game at the scale you are asking for.

Shell Shock!is two-player Ambush. I own both and Shell Shock is good when wanting to have the Ambush experience with another player. Not too difficult.

May be hard to find though - comes up occasionally on ebay.

For free PnP - you can't beat Valor & Victory - it's my 2nd highest rated game. A scenario (and there are now plenty - several REAL good fan made ones too) - plays in just over an hour. Great system. I am a huge fan. If you don't like PnP, you can purchase a set from PnP Productions:

Actually it's quite newbie friendly. I taught it to my nephew last month and we were playing inside of 15 minutes. You almost never have to refer to the rules and if you do, stuff is easy to find. There's a wonderful playsheet/dashboard/scorecard that puts everything right out in the open.

An experiment with ASL Starter Kit the previous year failed miserably, just for comparison.

Gunslinger

Old games, but should be available used. Gunslinger is one of the most exciting games that I've played. The rules look daunting, but after one gets the hang of it, the game becomes very easy to teach to new players.

If you can accept squad level, Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! (second edition) is really easy to learn, and the scenarios/rulebook is designed in such a way that you can read the first few pages, then play a few scenarios with just those rules, read a few more pages, then play a few scenarios with just the new rules etc. But even with everything in, it's an easy game to learn. No special rules for vehicles, and things like that. It's also super easy to get back into after a break from it.

As you have Ambush I would suggest breaking up into 2 or 3 teams and playing the same side. Ambush, along with many wargames only requires one experienced player who can use that to run the game. The good thing about using Ambush in this way is that you are all playing on the same side and so do not feel like you are holding back. The only negative with Ambush is that it is quite unique in what it does so isn't an introduction to "other" wargames. Although it does teach the basic MPAs and LOS rules.

I just wanted to thank you for mentioning these. I recently (like three days ago) got interested in trying to find a copy of Cry Havoc. You can imagine how that went. Then I read your post. I started researching these and just about wet myself. These are exactly what I was looking for. Immediately ordered both from UK because I cant wait! I love the geek.....my VISA hates the geek.
