What are the symbols on locations on the game board for, and when are they used?

Thanks in advance.

the most common reward from the arkham encounters.
I dont know if the frequency changes with the addition of the two expansions.

Also note that if the symbol is printed "negative" (dark symbol on black background rather than vice versa), it simply reminds you that there's a sure way to get that thing at that location (e.g. Sanity at the Asylum).

Those symbols aren't all that useful or reliable; use them as sort of "general guidelines" if you've doubts, but personally we ignore them most of the times.

Thanks for the help.

How do you mean "rewards for the encounters"? i don't have the rules in front of me, but i didn't realize you get rewards for surviving encounters.

Somtimes the location cards are positive and you can come out of a location encounter gaining stuff. Those symbols are what you're most likely to gain.
