I've been wanting to play HIS forever, but it's hard to find multiple people around here - I'd love to get into it via PBEM, if anyone has room for someone in a learning/teaching game!

I'd be interested in a teaching game via email. I have zero experience and have barely cracked the rules. But, if we get something going I'll actually be motivated. Thank you.

Thanks for the heads up!

I posted in the Facebook group, but that geeklist looks promising.

My thought was to play by VASSAL - either emailing log files back and forth or via Dropbox.

My hope was to find an experienced player to teach and show the ropes, but I may have to put that on hold as I have a lot of other things going on at the moment.

Hey guys,
I've played HIS by e-mail a lot in the past. Unfortunately I'm at my limit for games by e-mail (am big on Volko's COIN system). One suggestion I'd offer is to use the card management system in ACTS.org. It's way better than using Vassel or Cyberboard. Plus, you can have a common log of actions for everyone to access.

Wargameroom is the best because it automates everything, but you do need to all be live and connected to play.

Good luck gents. HIS is one of the best games ever. My teaching/moderating days are past me. However, another or one of you might find these files useful.
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/92667/acts-cb-tutorial-his
That will guide you through ACTS and CB and give you some tips on play as well. I don't use Vassal or Wargameroom, because the former doesn't guarantee file continuity and the latter doesn't allow freedom AFK. Both are great for 2-3 experienced player or those with ability to make live committment, and they have unique features that are better than CB, but Cyberboard is best for big multi-player games, especially if the players are prone to make mistakes in recording their moves.
Also, check out the files section on BGG for more play aids and BGG and CSW forums are always available for questions.

I'd be interested to join an email game if there is still a power unaccounted for. I don't have much experience, only three games at the WBC last summer.

At this point, I think I've gotten myself in over my head with other PBEM games - but please, use this to facilitate something else if anyone else wants to start a game!

Hi everyone.

I would love to give it a try. I'm a beginner with just 1 real FTF 6-players game, a couple of 2P-games and a few solo games.

I need help with the PBEM/asynchronous thing, though. I'm no stranger to Wargameroom and Vassal, but I just do live games. I've been fiddling with the Vassal HIS module and I'm not sure how can this be handled with all the response card possibilities.

Do you update the log each CP -because of responses?
Do you use exclusively Vassal?
Do you need ACTS? (seems like the custom module at comcast is down)

If someone can help me, i'd be happy to join. Got a lot of free time nowadays.

EDIT: I just realized that even go through the Luther 95's can be a drag. I guess protestant chooses the space and states it in the log, then rolls the dice, and if it's not an auto hit, he has to save and wait for the papacy player to roll and send the file back. Is that right? It seems downtime hell to me.

The best approach to asynchronous play is to just accept that occasionally you may have to roll back something you've done based on a response card play from someone else. It's just not feasible to pause in between everything--the game is long enough in PBEM form, no need to extend it more. Pages 6-7 of the Scenario Book offer some guidance here.

ACTS usage is not a strict technical requirement, but you will find that the vast majority of the player community uses it, so in all likelihood you'll end up using it if you want to find a group to play with. The ACTS module is up and running (I am using it right now).

Generally, you want to roll the other person's dice on their behalf in things like Reformation attempts, debates, combat, and so on--that keeps things ticking along at a good pace.

If there is a free slot, I would be interested also. I haven't played HIS with ACTS but five live games.

Add me to the list

ACTS and Vassal/Cyberboard for me.

Currently playing 2xHIS and 2xVQ online but have plenty of time as I am retired.

Bit by bit I'm falling into all the traps of ACTS, Vassal and Cyberboard (let alone the rules of the games themselves) and I am getting a lot of experience in watching how the experts deal with my cockups!

Add me to that list as well. Then it's almost two full games! I have read the rules and understand them quite well, but I have never played the game.

BTW: do not underestimate the knowledge, time, necessary familiarity with the platform (Vassal/Cyberboard) and the rules and the attention to detail necessary to complete the 'end of turn' functions. I'm watching with astonishment and some considerable gratitude the experienced folks doing it in the games I'm playing. It's not for the faint-hearted!

That's why I haven't just started a game by now. I'd like to have at least one person with some experience.

I could setup a Pbem HIS game with 5 beginners using vassal+acts+dropbox. I looks like there are more than 5 players interested but I cannot manage the selection.

Here are some useful files and links for His PBEM. You don't have to read and know all of them, but the more you know the better for the game flow.

Vassal

Vassal HiS Module

ACTS

ACTS-Cyberboard guide (Ignore cyberboard for this game)

ACTS Module for Here I Stand Help

I wish we'll have an active and cheerfull group.

I'm in! Edit: well I am just to make up the numbers if needed as I'm not really a beginner and wouldn't want to take a beginner's place.

I think it would be best if people playing could devote a decent chunk of time at various times every day since - as beginners with either the game or the platform - there will be many issues to deal with, and that will mean quite a bit of conversation which - if dragged out over days about one issue - will be a bit soul-destroying

Maybe we could set up a geeklist for conversation rather than cluttering ACTS? Having said that, ACTS emails all the participants with every transaction which is rather good.
