Welcome to Wine Country!

Santa Rosa is located about 50 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, in Sonoma County. Just minutes away from the ocean, the redwoods and more than 100 wineries, it is easy to see why our residents wouldn't consider living anywhere else.

As county seat of Sonoma County, with a healthy mix of businesses in the technological, retail, medical, agricultural and service sectors, Santa Rosa is deservedly considered to be the urban hub of the Redwood Empire, a magnet for shoppers, entrepreneurs and students alike. While in town, make sure to drop by The Santa Rosa Mall, the largest retail commerce center in the Redwood Empire area! You won't be disappointed!

Re: In progress
October 30, 2006

Maureen slammed the door and tossed the keys on the endtable. What an exhausting day. Kids climbing the walls all day long, not a moment to stop and gather her thoughts. It was good to be home. She flipped the remote on, and dropped it on the couch. CSI would be on in twenty. Just enough time to grab something to eat, if she skipped the news. She headed into the kitchen.

"---no explanation for the sharp increase in admissions. In other news, we go to Robert Castle, on the scene at a nineteen-car pileup on the 101. Robert, we have reports that this massive accident was caused by a commerical vehicle that had to brake to avoid a group of pedestrians fighting in the middle of the highway, is that correct?"

Maureen didn't catch the broadcast. The ravioli finished just as the CSI intro started to roll. She flopped down on the cushions, finished her meal by the first commercial break, and was asleep by the second. It had been an exhausting day.

She awoke when the front door thumped on its hinges.

WHUMP.

What the fuck?

WHUMP. The lock jittered in the catch.

"Who is it?!" she called.

WHUMP.

WHUMP-WHUMP-WHUMP!

"Michael?" she yelled. "Michael! Someone's trying to break in!"

No answer. All the lights were out. The TV was on, but there was no broadcast. The screen said "Standby, technincal difficulties". Where was Mike? He should have been home hours ago. He should have got her up before CSI ended.

WHUMP-WHAM-WHAM-WHAM!

"MICHAEL!" she screamed. What the fuck should she do? She'd never had her house broken into before. She didn't own a gun. Mike's golf clubs, in the closet. She hopped up and ran into the bedroom.

WHAM! WHAM! WHUMP-WHAM-WHAM!

Fuck. Holy shit. She grabbed the one with the biggest end. It had a three on it.

"Go away! Get out of here! I have a gun!"

WHAM!
WHAM!
WHAM!

Then, a splintering crash. She had no idea a door sounded like that when it broke. Footsteps in the living room. Fuck, now they knew she was home. She shouldn't have yelled. The footsteps padded around the living room, slowly. The bedroom was right down the hall. She didn't want to be here for this. She should just run. Sneak into the kitchen, leave through the back door, call the police. There was nothing in the house she wanted to get killed over. She had to do it now, before the thief entered the hallway.

On her hands and knees, Maureen peeked out the door. The hall was empty. Getting to her feet, silently, she stayed in a low crouch. Twenty feet to the kitchen, then out the door. She moved.

She was quiet. Quiet as a mouse. But she must have been breathing too hard, or something. Halfway down the hall, she heard a grunt, and the footsteps again. Not padding this time, running. Fuck.

She straightened up and dashed the rest of the way to the kitchen entryway. Around the corner, around the stove, past the table and - WHACK! She went ass over head, as she stumbled on a chair in the wrong spot.

Maureen hit her head on the corner of the cabinet as she went down. Dazed for a moment, she lay facing the entryway, trying to get her shit together, trying to clear her blurry vision. She had to get up. She had to get out. She had to - Michael appeared in the entryway.

"M-Michael? Michael? Mike, fuck. You scared me. I fucking hit my-"

In the six seconds it took her to speak the words, Michael had sprinted from the entryway to her side of the kitchen.

In the two seconds after she stopped, she realized something was very, very wrong with him. There was a large chunk of meat missing from his neck, and black lines running from the wound up the side of his face, and down his neck. There was blood all over his shirt, and all over his mouth.

His mouth?

The one second it took her to process this thought was the one that really mattered. The golf club clattered to the floor as Michael sank his fingers into her left eyesocket and his teeth into her windpipe. She never even had time to scream.

It's morning. But the nightmare's not over.

Re: In progress
DAWN OF THE DEAD

This will be a different kind of game; not really standard werewolf, as there is no daily lynch, and there are no “night kills”. Everyone starts the game as a human trapped in the local mall. Everyone is on the same team, with the same basic goal: to survive the onslaught of undead until they can figure out a way to escape. Most players will have additional goals that may conflict with each other, and this is where the tension in the game will come from. Everyone wants to figure out a way to get to safety, but not everyone will agree on the what that safe destination is; and not everyone will want to accomplish the same tasks along the way.

In addition, everyone has to worry about the threat of zombies. When you meet in the parking lot outside the mall, you won’t know exactly what lies waiting inside. As you explore the different areas of the mall gathering information and supplies, you

you might come upon pockets of the living dead; patrons and employees who were trapped inside when the outbreak began. Any time a player encounters the living dead, he runs the risk of getting killed, or even worse, bitten. A bitten player becomes Infected, and such a player will eventually turn into a zombie himself. There is no way around it; there is no cure for a bite. If a player is bitten and becomes a zombie, his goals immediately change. Goals and victory conditions are further outlined below.

At game start, the players will all meet each other for the first time, and survive a special Day 1 Event that will lead to their being trapped inside the Santa Rosa Mall. Once inside, the players will meet each other, begin to figure out what they each can do, look for a way to escape, and figure out a plan to get to safety. Based upon the characters you have chosen, there will be different possible methods of victory, each with different chances of success, each with its own difficulty to accomplish. The group will also elect a Leader, a player who, when the heat of action forces a split-second decision, will be able to make important choices and give orders. When the group has decided upon a plan of escape and attempts to act upon it, the game will move into a second, shorter part which takes place outside the Mall.

The amount of time you spend in the Mall, and what you do with that time, is totally up to you. Each Day, the players decided what areas (if any) of the Mall they will explore, and which tasks they will attempt to accomplish. The players may split up into many small groups to cover more ground, or stay in fewer, larger groups for added safety.

Each Day will contain three Phases: Discuss Options, Take Action, and Resolution. Resolution is performed by the moderator, and requires no input from the players.

Discussion Deadline: 8:00pm BGG
Take Action Deadline: 10:00pm BGG
Resolution Posted By: whenigettoit:00am BGG

DISCUSS OPTIONS
At the beginning of this Phase, each player will have certain options PM’d to them by the moderator. These are ideas that you’ve come up with based on information you’ve gained, things you’ve noticed, or just brilliant strokes of genius you’ve had. There will be a period for discussion, in which you may reveal any of the options you have knowledge of, but you are not forced to do so (there may be reasons why you’d want to keep them secret). The group will discuss the options that are suggested, and each player will elect which of the options to act upon. By the Phase deadline, each player will have posted his intention to act on a certain option, using the standard Cassandra voting to declare his intentions.

Example: After discussion, the group decides to send three players to the Roof to see what’s up there, four players to the Sports Authority store, hoping to find some useful equipment, and seven players to the Parking Lot, to see if there are any working vehicles. Agnespoodle, shugyosha, and xandryyte have volunteered to go to the roof. They each enter [vote Roof] into the main forum.

You are allowed to change your mind and perform any task you want, right up to the deadline.

TAKE ACTION
After the Options Phase ends, players will move out, heading toward their different objectives. The moderator will post a short synopsis of each group heading toward their destinations, and hint at what lies in wait for them. At this point, each player may PM an Action Mode to the moderator, in order to perform their task more effectively, or prepare for a possible encounter with zombies. Action Modes are explained in the Combat section below.

RESOLUTION
This Phase is just where the Moderator processes all the players orders and resolves Combat and Escape if they take place. At the end of this Phase, the Mod will post the Day's Resolution, telling everyone what happened to them and letting them know what their current status is.

Options will be rather open-ended, but will commonly include destinations that groups will want to search or explore, and specific items or tasks within those locations, once they have been revealed.

For example, an Option on day 1 might simply be "Roof"; and players who choose it are simply exploring the Roof. But once that location has been searched, more Options might become available to any player located there.

Re: In progress
CHARACTERS

In Dawn of the Dead, balance is not really an issue, since nobody has special roles like Seer or Mason. Everyone is an average Joe, caught up in the nightmare of a world crawling with the living dead.

Therefore, when the game starts, each player will get to "create" his or her character to a certain degree. At some point before the game starts, I'll PM you and ask you who your character is. You'll respond with an idea and some choices from the lists below, and also tell me who would play you in the movie.

Listed below are Advantages and Disadvantages. You have two "points" to spend on Advantages, and you may take a Disadvantage to get a third point.

For instance, if I want to create a hardass cop who just can't take any more of this undead shit, I might pick "Tough" and "Firearms Training". I also want him to have a gun, so I take "Hero" and can then choose "Armed" as well. That sounds like a police officer. Then I would decide that Samuel L. Jackson plays me in the movie, so that everyone knows I am tired of these motherfuckin' zombies in this motherfuckin' mall.

I will create characters to "balance out" the player pool if you don't care who you play.

ADVANTAGES

Armed - You have a gun. Either you were ready for something like this, or you just found it laying around when you escaped. Either way, you have a gun.
Firearms Training - You know more about guns than just "point and shoot". You get +1 to strike when fighting zombies with guns.
Quick - You are lightweight and fast. You get +1 to escape.
Strong - You are big and mighty. You get +2 to strike when fighting with a hand-to-hand weapon (like a club or knife).
Technical Training - You probably were some kind of engineer, or maybe you're just handy with mechanical stuff. You have a much better success rate when you Repair or Modify items and locations.
Tough - You are healthy and robust. You can take an extra Wound before you die.

[NO LONGER AVAILABLE:]
Agile - You are harder to grab than a greased pig. Zombies get -1 to strike when they attack you.
Intelligent - You're sharp, whether it's from book-learnin' or real-life experience. You will sometimes get additional Options at the start of each day.
Lucky - Hey, you haven't been bitten yet, right? Things just seem to work out a little more often for you. You get a bonus to all random rolls, and maybe something good will happen when you least expect it.
Mall Employee - You work at the Mall, and you're familiar with the lay of the land. You already know some things that it would take everyone else a Search to discover.
Medical Training - Maybe you were a nurse or a doctor. Maybe you were in the military. You know how to dress wounds and diagnose illness much better than the average person. You have a better success rate at Healing and Checking For Infection.
Perceptive - You tend to notice things that others miss. Every once in a while, you will get extra info about a situation or task PM'd to you by the moderator.
Rich - You used to have a lot of money, back when that meant something. You have an alternate, secret win condition.

DISADVANTAGES

Antisocial - This disadvantage doesn't do anything bad to you. It does something bad for the rest of the group. Are you gonna play nice?
Dumb - You're just not the sharpest tool in the shed. You won't get as many Options each day as other players.
Elderly - You're gettin' too old for this shit. You get -1 to strike with all weapons, and -1 to escape.
Hero - You have to do things the dramatic way. You cannot choose the Survival or Ready action modes when in combat.
Loner - You're not much on teamwork. You don't count as an Ally in encounters.
Relationship - You have a special bond with one of the other players; maybe they are your parent, sibling, or spouse. You can PM with the other person (you get a Cassy chat room), but you can't win unless they survive too.
Slow - You can't keep up. You get -3 to escape, and you better hope you're not the last one out the door.
Stubborn - You don't react well to other people telling you what to do, and you don't like to listen to other opinions. You can only choose Options that you suggest to the group.
Unlucky - You just seem to be cursed. At some point in the game, something will go completely, horribly wrong.

[NO LONGER AVAILABLE:]
Clumsy - You can't hit the broad side of a barn. 1's AND 2's count as critical misses for you.
Small - Maybe you are a kid, or maybe you are a pencil-necked geek. You get +1 to escape, but -5 to strike with hand-to-hand weapons and -2 to guns.

I might add more later.

Re: In progress
STORY PROGRESSION

Each night after orders are recieved and encounters are adjucated, the Moderator will post a Resolution. This post will include a recap of the days events from a narrative point of view. This Resolution is posted to progress the story in a general way, but it is important to note that not EVERYTHING that happens in an Encounter will be posted in the Resolution. Certain details that only particular characters have noticed will be shared via Cassy chatroom by the mod, and it's up to the players to decide what needs to be public knowledge in those cases.

For instance, let's say you were in Focused mode while your party searched the Security Room. The group discovered video monitors showing the interior of some of the stores in the mall. You also found a Handgun that a security guard had left laying around, and you think nobody saw you pick it up (the moderator gave you this info in private). The Resolution in this case might report the fact that Macy's is crawling with zombies - but it doesn't say anything about the Handgun. Do you tell everyone else what you found? Or do you keep it to yourself? What if someone else *did* see you pick it up after all? The choice is yours, but every player can be certain that the Resolution post is incomplete at beest.

LEADERSHIP
At some point in the game, one player may be elected the "Leader". When parties go off to perform tasks, they may also elect a Leader. This title confers no special priviledge, but in the heat of the moment, if a split decision must be made, the Leader will be the one to make it. If you choose to support someone as a Leader, make sure you trust them. You may be leaving your life in their hands.

Re: In progress
COMBAT AND ESCAPE

Combat has a complex resolution process. Whenever humans and zombies end up in the same location as a result of the Options players have chosen, there will be an "Encounter". During an Encounter, the human players will fight and/or try to escape from the zombie menace.

All combat will actually be resolved by the mod according to a very specific formula, but although the players do not make direct combat decisions, their choices will affect the outcome heavily. Many factors are considered when there is an Encounter. Here is an overview.

COMBAT ROUNDS
When an Encounter begins, the mod will resolve it in a series of Rounds. Each round, every player and zombie involved in the Encounter will either attempt to Escape from the combat, or have a chance to inflict damage on an opponent. This chance is called a "Strike".

Successful Strikes will result in damage to the opponent. At the end of a round, damage will be applied to character who were hit, characters who successfully Escaped will be removed from the Encounter, and another Round will begin. This will continue until one side has been destroyed or the humans have all Escaped (Zombies will never try to escape).

STRIKE
Although many factors will influence how an Encounter plays out, the most important is the Strike. Each round you fight instead of Escaping, you roll to Strike an enemy. A Strike's success is determined by the random roll of a 20-sided die:

1: Critical Miss
2-10: Miss
11-19: Hit
20: Critical Hit

The Strike number can be modified by many different things, including your character's Advantages, any Weapon he may be carrying, the Mode of Action you have decided upon, and most influential of all, the number of allies in the battle. When the mod rolls for your character's Strike, all your bonuses are added to it to see if you hit or miss.

Example: BagPipeDan has found some zombies in the K.B.Toys store. He's carrying a Baseball Bat(+1 Strike), and he's Strong (+1 with hand weapons), and he chose Aggressive as his Mode of Action (+1 Strike). He's all alone though, so he gets no bonus for allies. I roll the d20 and get 8. That would be a miss, but he gets to add +3 for all his bonuses, and that makes it a hit. He whacks the zombie in the noggin.

If a 1 is rolled on a Strike roll, it is a Critical Miss. This means that no matter how much was added as a bonus, the character who rolled the 1 will miss. If a 20 is rolled, it is a Critical Hit, and double the damage is done to the enemy.

ESCAPE
Characters who attempt to Escape instead of Striking are resolved the same way, but an Escape roll recieves no bonus from weapons, only applicable Advantages, Action Modes and number of allies. A character who Escapes leaves the location, abandoning his chosen task for the day (and any allies who are still engaged), and returns to the safety of a secured area.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
The most important factor in Encounters is numeric superiority. If two humans encounter a single zombie, the zombie can only interfere with one of the humans. This leaves the other human free to take an extra-good shot. In the same way, if the zombies seriously outnumber the humans, it will be almost impossible for the humans to dodge and escape them all. While the exact numbers are secret, all players should know these two rules of Strength In Numbers:

If humans outnumber zombies 2-to-1, they get +20 to strike.
If zombies outnumber humans 3-to-1, they get +20 to strike.

As you can see, you don't want to get seriously outnumbered.

ACTION MODE
Once you have decided upon an Option for the day, I will send you a PM asking for a little more information about what you are planning to do on your task. Your response can include a "Mode of Action", a style that your character will act in should he encounter any zombies. Here are the action modes.

-Ready: This is the standard action mode, and if you don't PM me orders for something different, this is the mode you will use. Ready mode offers no bonus to strike should you engage any zombies, but also carries no penalty to escape or to performing the task you have set out to accomplish. In this mode, you will always attack the target most dangerous to you at the moment, and will attempt escape if you are outnumbered more than 2-to-1.

-Aggressive: This mode means you are out to kill. Aggressive gives you +1 to strike if you encounter zombies, but -1 to Escape rolls. In this mode, you will always attack the target most dangerous to you at the moment, and will only attempt escape if you are outnumbered 3-to-1.

-Death Wish: This mode means that only you or the zombies are walking away. You get +2 to strike, but will not attempt to Escape at any point during the encounter. You will either win, or die. In this mode, you will always attack the target most dangerous to you at the moment.

-Survival: This mode means you want to live through the day no matter what. You will Escape at the earliest opportunity, but recieve no strike bonus. In addition, you are not as focused on your task as you should be, and may perform your duties at a sub-par level.

-Protect: This mode means you are putting an ally's safety ahead of your own. Like Aggressive mode, you recieve a +1 to strike and -1 to escape, but instead of attacking the zombies most dangerous to you, you will attempt to defend particular members of your party from attack. If you choose the Protect mode, list the order in which you wish to keep them safe (with the person you want to protect the most completely at the top). While in Protect mode, you will not attempt escape unless the people you list ABOVE you in protective order are all dead.

-Focused: This mode means you are concentrating on accomplishing your task rather than fighting zombies. You get -1 to strike and -1 to escape, but will perform your duties at the highest possible level (for example, finding well-hidden items that would have been missed, or repairing a machine to full capacity instead of just jerry-rigging it to function). If you encounter zombies, you will attack the target most dangerous to you.

Infection and Wounds
---------
Everyone can take three Wounds (Tough characters can take 4). The third (or fourth) Wound knocks you out, but you're still alive and can be rescued. After that, another Wound will kill you.

Wounds can be healed by taking the Resting action, and characters with the Medical advantage can also heal other player's Wounds if they have the appropriate supplies.

Zombies will Infect you on a successful Critical Hit. Infection is not neccesarily fatal, but at the start of the game, nobody knows what the effects of Infection are. Hopefully you will never have to find out.

OK, I'm going with a deadline of 1:00 pm BGG. But there should be a LOT of time for discussion, and plenty of time to get an order in, and I always accept conditionals.
