I know next to nothing about this particular game. The description given makes it sound an awful lot like "Twilight Struggle" by GMT. Anyone know if that is the case, or is this something completely new?

*EDIT*: Question mark added to subject.

Re: A Rip-Off of Twilight Struggle
There have been dozens if not hundreds of games on the Battle of Waterloo, and the description of the subject matter is pretty much the same for all of them. That doesn't in any way indicate that all but the first is a rip-off.

If a historical situation is interesting, it will tend to spawn many games.

Re: A Rip-Off of Twilight Struggle
A cold war game like Twilight struggle is an old idea. So it is quite possible for two games to be similar. For example how many WWII games have hexes, cardboard counters for the units with movement points and strength points. Simulation games of the same subject are bound to have some similar elements.

I made a game similar to twilight stuggle 30 years ago for personal use but it was pretty bad. I used a similar idea for a map and influence placement like in twilight struggle. But there were key elements that did not exist in those days. I did not have the idea of cards for events and ops. I had no cards at all. Just lots of phases. I also did not use the concept of area majority scoring which comes from Eurogames. Over the next few years someone will surely another game on the coldwar. Or use the twilight system for another epoch: ie 18th century colonialism, the peloponesian war, the war lords of China in the early twentieth century, the vietnam war, etc. It is probably a good system for a guerilla war.

Hi I'm one of the authors of the game and I can assure you
that this is NOT a Twilight Struggle Rip-off (Excellent game by the
way).
TWS is more a global and strategic game, CW:CIA vs KGB focuses on the
secret struggle between spies of Cold War era !

I think the cold ware borrowed a lot from Ian Fleming. And let's not even get into the "star wars" strategic defense initiative. I mean, come on.

I heard that RA and Cleopatra and the Society of Architects were also exactly alike.

Re: A Rip-Off of Twilight Struggle
If you want to call this a "Rip-Off" of anything, this is a "Rip-Off" of Blackjack. I've played this before I'd heard of Twilight Struggle. I can tell you from experience that it is a fine little game and isn't really like anything else out there.

It makes me a little sad that people are going to see the title of this and probably think it is a Rip-off without actually reading the post. You could have at least put a question mark at the end of the title.

By now though, you should know that this is in no way a Rip-Off.

Re: A Rip-Off of Twilight Struggle
I disagree. I dont think a lot of people would draw that "rip off" conclusion; but there are always a few who make bold statements like such based on the surface level stuff; hell, I've done that myself on a few occasions.

Re: A Rip-Off of Twilight Struggle
I get generally driven nuts by people who ask for a comparison of two unrelated games based on some tangential theme.

"Which should I buy - Through the Desert or Oasis?"

Well, gee, if you really only have room in your collection for one camel game...

But while we're on the subject, maybe someone can help me.

Which should I do? See the three "Lord of the Rings" movies, or watch the four "Ring of the Nibelung" operas? There's obviously no point in doing both, so which one is better? wow

And why did Tolkien rip off Wagner?

How sad some rush to such premature conclusions, particularly such superficial ones.

The Cold War has been a much neglected subject, particularly considering the good game material it (or aspects of it) make.

I get driven nuts by ALL recommnedation threads!

Someone lists 2 or 3 or half dozen games and ask which should they get--in all cases the REAL answer is "It depends on.......
- What games to you already have?
- Do you want something similar to what you have? or something different?
- What games do you like now?
- What games in this genre you have played before? Are you trying a new genre for you? (I'd recommend a different game to someone who has never played a wargame or railroad game before than to someone with some experience at either genre.)
- Are you looking for a specific audience (non-gaming SO, kids, lunch time game, etc.)
- Are there mechanics you like or dislike?
- Wargaming: Is there an era or scale you'd like or dislike?
- Is there a particular number of players you need? (And the too often "I'd like a game that plays for 2 and more players"--not knowing there are substantial reasons why 2 player games and multiplayer games are different.)

Too often, people just spout out the game they like. But, simply because I like a game (or more people who get to the thread first like a game) doesn't mean the recommendee will like the game. Tastes differ.

I am interested as well, but I cannot tell if it a CCG either. If it is, count me out. I see that Thoughthammer is selling multiple pack sets, so it appears that it is unfortunately a CCG.

Go to http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/productsrelease.html . CCGs say "CCG" on the right hand side. Cold War does not have this. So Cold War doesn't seem to be a CCG according to this.

Morgan, you are correct. A couple of the responses demonstrate that people are not even willing to read the first sentence of my post where I make it clear that "I know next to nothing about this game" then proceed to assume I'm making the claim that the game rips off T.S.

I've added a question mark to the subject of the thread, to (perhaps) help avoid this confusion.

While you are at it change the word "Rip-Off"; like Uncle Buck's hat it "angers some people".
