Is this Kickstarter campaign happening or did the new MTG Heroscape scare them off?

They got no where near their funding goal (didn't even make it to $20,000 of the $150,000 they were asking for). They said they intend to try again.

Yes, you can see in their latest update that they're going to launch again in mid-February with a goal around $30,000. Hope they reach it this time!

Are these tiles that don't lock together?

Yeah I don't think they locked. Certainly not with the Heroscape method.

I'm curious how they can succeed with a target of only 20% of their previous goal and still make the product they pitched.

Quote from their most recent update.

Hyground Tiles, Kickstarter Update #10 wrote:
We've had to find a way to overcome the cost of the 12 injection molds we wanted to create and we believe we've done so. Our new campaign goal should be around $30K, a goal we feel is very reachable. We will have to limit the available tile sizes for that goal but will have stretch goals to make other tile sizes available. Also, we've added a new spin casting machine which is allowing us to create all the detail accessories in-house.

My hope is they've learned a lot in the past few months and that this new attempt will work.

Why would anyone want them if the slightest table bump could send them flying? I don't get it....

I personally HATED the locking mechanism because I ended up breaking valuable terrain trying to "unlock" them. These tiles have way more variety and give new depth to the landscape you are playing on.

There has to be some sort of lock otherwise this whole endeavor seems pointless, you're right. Maps would be incredibly unstable.

They interlock by the "crown" pieces. Each tile part has no top. So it is strategic placement of crowns that interlock the pieces.

Also they do fit on heroScape tiles. But do not interlock with heroScape tiles.

Is this just speculation, or do you have some information indicating that the HyGround people have thrown in the towel?

Obviously speculation. 3 months is not that long. Though the silence from the designers is odd and not exactly a good sign.

DEAD on the other hand is Road/Kill which theres been no word on since the second KS fail.

Now I'm curious about these again. I would really like some of their cool designs. I hope they still start another Kickstarter.
