After 2 games now of Tikal, each with 3 players, we find that we are always scraping around trying to find enough levels to add to our temples and end up having to substitute flipped over pieces or steal middle levels out from other unconvered temples, etc to stand in for the top temple level. I'm wondering if we are doing something wrong or unconventional that we find we don't have enough pieces to play the game with.

We aren't missing any pieces. Does anyone else have this problem?

The temple level shortage is intended, you are not supposed to steal pieces from already built temples.

The shortage is intended to create races, there can only be so many of each size temple, and that makes early and regular excavation key if one wants to get one of the higher value temples.

Right - you are playing incorrectly if you borrow pieces from other temples or make up counters etc.

Its key if you have pretty much locked up access to a temple, but can't get it past 5 or 6.

The answers above are correct. If all of the "7" temple pieces are gone, you can't build a temple higher than 6 (even if there are "8" temple pieces available--no skipping levels!).

This is exactly the sort of post that makes this site great. Although, what if there had been a shortage of Temple level tiles, and it was not intended to lock up the way it does? Then other people would have responded "Hey, yeah, I have the same problem. Whats with that?" Then others would have come in and accused all those people of whining and complaining, when in reality, it was just a question or observation. The point is, you never know until you post, and you shouldn't be judged for calling publishers or designers out on their (potential) mistakes.

Ah, that explains it then. That'll add more tension to the game and cause us to become more competitive for the same scarce resources. Thanks everyone!

That should crank up the intensity dial several notches. The real question now is how are the other players going to respond, to this rules clarification?

Are they going to go: "Oh, that will make it more exciting!"
or "What!! How are we supposed to complete our temples now? What kind of new rule is this? ...."
