Strange Brew Werewolf, eh?

Coo roo coo coo coo, roo coo coo!
Coo roo coo coo coo, roo coo coo!

Welcome to the Great White North, eh? All hosers should sign up. There will be beer and back bacon. Beauty.

It's werewolf with those hosers you love, Bob & Doug McKenzie!

Important rules info

This game will be run slightly differently than most games on BGG.

Lynches will require a true majority. That is, if there are 19 players, 10 votes will be required for a lynch. No more killing someone on the say so of 20% of the players. Canada is a peaceful nation, eh? Can't come to a decision? The mod reserves a right to set a shot clock. Shot clock violations result in a random modkill. Turns out the mod is from America. We loves us some violence.

There is no set deadline. Lynches occur the moment the players reach a voting majority. Night orders will be due ASAP, and the mod will wait a reasonable amount of time for them. Preliminary night orders are encouraged.

If you expect to cast a willy-nilly random D1 vote and disappear, this may not be the game for you. Expect to be moderately active in the thread. After all, lives hang in the balance.

Roles? Yes, there are roles.

I love the theme, but having no set lynch time (as soon as majority is reached) and only majority lynches just does not work with online WW.

I have to agree to a point as I remember how tough it was to get a majority in the Latria's Tag game... But many factors have me wanting to try this out anyways... It might work, it might not but you can't say the theme won't be fun!

Not here apparently, but it does work elsewhere where the pace is slower. Most of the other mafia/ww boards play much slower and use majority not plurality. It takes a lot longer for the village to achieve a pro-village consensus. A few days if everyone posts several times a day, or weeks if many players are at 1-2 posts per day.

Forcing or shortening that timeline hurts the village. If that pro-evil advantage is compensated for, it can work. Same as online "speed" werewolf and with some similarities to face-to-face play also. Both of those formats also favor evil.

I've found from playing both ways, that I prefer the BGG way: faster pace, daily lynches. I have trouble remembering what's going on in a game where there's only a couple posts a day and it stretches for weeks (aka mafiascum.net)

Sorry, this is sort of wrong too. Hmm, at a site where I regularly play, we can knock down a 30 player game in this format in under 2 weeks, and usually closer to 1 than 2. There will be anywhere from 2000-8000 total posts in that timeframe. This format works extremely well in a fast paced environment. And this is not all "speed werewolf" players, there are plenty of people playing that don't have internet access all day(but obviously a lot of them do).

Because the last time you did, you died in 1905?

Colour me interested, rat. I won't sign up officially until I have my first game (and possibly my second) played and over with.

Re: Strange Brew, eh? Signups for Nov. 27
To say that such a format cannot work is ignoring the first dozen or whatever games that took place here on BGG.

At least on BGG, this format was known as "instalynch" - that is, the lynch occurs immediately when the majority is reached (however, generally on BGG if everyone had voted "nightfall" then a plurality was sometimes allowed).

Now, that format has indeed taken a back seat to the current "structured" games that we play. However, it definitely did work. Most games shifted to the new system due to complaints about slowness (sometimes people were hesitant to vote, without a deadline), sniping, and, in some cases, someone being lynched before they even have a chance to get online to post (the current system at least guarantees that if you're stuck at work and takes you 5 hours to get in, you won't suddenly be lynched).

Some other games have used a combination - "The deadline is X, but if anyone reaches a majority before then, night falls immediately."

I like the theme of this one. I'll have to check my schedule on joining.

which are quite excellent reasons on why many prefer the current system, but I think it is always good to mix things up and not get stuck in a rut.

well, at least for others, I have no desire to play in an instalynch game.

8000 posts in a 2 week period?? wow!! that is almost 600 posts a day, unreal. and people here complain about having only 5 pages of posts to read each day. The Thing Redux is our largest game and it had almost 4000 posts and took 19 days so only about 200 posts per day.

since you play games in other forums, how do they compare to the games played here? which forum do you prefer?

Re: Strange Brew, eh? Signups for Nov. 27
Perhaps some guarantee that, no matter what the voting situation is, at least X (pick a number) hours will pass between the start of "day" and a lynch, regardless of majority vote, might work. Exceptions could be made for situations where there's an obvious lynch where no one will be changing their minds (like a revealed wolf). We had a few cases in the "instalynch" days where people would login only a few hours after day began, and they were dead, with night already beginning, with no opportunity to defend themselves. There is something to be said for knowing that you have some time to be able to get in and check things.

If you read back to some of the early games when "instalynch" was first going out of favor, you'll see in the rules often the line "Instalynch: Not using it". Of course, it's been a long time since an instalynch game was played, so no one bothers with that anymore.

I guess it's time to change the avatar back to the spice-addled kitty.
