This post is to let you know that you should schedule some time out during BGG.CON 2006 to partake in the Treasure Hunt - direct from the mind of Dave Arnott.

The hunt will take place around 3pm on Friday afternoon - we'll have a signup sheet at the convention.

If you have never done a treasure hunt before, here's the basic information:

Teams of 4 players work through a set of puzzles and challenges to locate a hidden treasure somewhere in the game location.

Puzzles are usually of the type that you can find on Tanga (www.tanga.com), but there are other physical type puzzles for this hunt.

This hunt should last about 2-3 hours in length, and it's a blast!

Dave will fill in some more details here.

Hey, All,

Aldie covered most of it, really. Basically it's a team event. You can sign-up as a full team... or just as you (or a partial team) and we'll put teams together.

This particular hunt doesn't actually have a hidden treasure at the end, rather it has a final answer that all teams are racing toward, and the winning team will, of course, get a prize.

You and your team will have to solve a series of puzzles - many of them lead to a one-word answer (like Tanga), some of them lead to other puzzles, some of them send you around the hotel grounds... hopefully, all of them are fun.

Because fun is what I'm shooting for. A lot of you have probably never done a Puzzle Hunt before, and that's great. Because this one isn't designed for puzzle pros, though, of course, there will definitely be enough challenges to keep the pros happy. As much as I want to show the world how smart and tricky I can be, that's become, like, my third goal for this hunt, right behind Make it Fun and See Goal #1.

Teams of 4 are what's preferred, but you can have 5 or 6 if you're having trouble trying to figure out who doesn't make the cut.

At around 3 hours, it's basically the same as playing a long game... or a regular game with sloooooow players - and why would you do that when you can have a way better time doing the Hunt?

Thems the basics. More will be explained at the Con on Friday. But I'll try to answer any questions that get posted here, if I can without tipping any of my various hats.

Hmm... should I organize a team or join one ?

Sadly, last night's Tanga puzzle took too long for me.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
But that's because I looked up every flag. Not that I minded that much, but you really didn't have to. When I realized it was just a red herring, the puzzle took no time at all to solve. But I did find the coolest flag look-up tool, and spent a lot of time just futzing around with it.

Tom, you won't need an internet connection or any special research materials to do this Hunt, just your basic brain and your sense of adventure. And in re: your brain... remember, you'll have at least 3 other people helping you. Don't underestimate the solving power of the kibitz.

Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but for me puzzles are easier to solve when I'm actually holding them in my hot little hands, as opposed to seeing them on a monitor.

Will you be hosting this while wrapped in tin foil?

I'm just askin', is all.

Actually, my real question (prompted by Dennis U.) -- is this a new treasure hunt or have people who have been in your previous treasure hunt(s) seen this one?

Er... um... yeah, sorta. Sorry guys (especially Dennis). It all came together so late, there was no way I was gonna be able to do this completely from scratch.

But I will wrap myself in tin foil if that helps.

Dennis (et al): there are a nice handful of new puzzles, though, and I'm more than willing to let you have at 'em on the side, if you want.

To that end: anyone who did my last Hunt (2000? 2001?), please don't spoil the fun for, well... me. I've changed up a nice batch o' stuff (including the removal of all the super hard potentially-no-fun puzzles - I know you know the ones I'm talking about), but enough of the old Hunt remains such that you could give away significant parts of it if you wanted... or by accident. So please be mindful.

Thanks.

Hey Terri, do you remember our team name last year during trivia? Didn't it start with a D?
