How do fired workers return to the pool of available workers (on the demand tracks)? Only by applying the effects of the economy markers at the beginning of each new cycle?

We ended our first 4-player game with demand tracks emptied, or nearly.

Yes workers get back by the according figure in the economic Marker only (beside specific event marker functions). Since the figures vary from game to game and the strategy of the players have influence to the number of workers in the market it is not unusual that the market is (almost) empty and wages are high. In other game rounds the wages do not exceed 3P during the whole Game.

Thanks. The game is a blast, a brain burner! We love it. We played a 4-Player game in 5 hours yesterday, until 4am. We're still a bit shaken up.
