So I was very happy to receive my copy of Dead of Winter recently, and while it was on its way I had been watching all the videos, listening to all the podcasts and reading as much as I could on it.

I found this thread on making a custom insert, and watched the Order of Gamers foamcore tutorials on how to build inserts here and decided to give it a go.

This idea was confirmed when I received my copy, unpacked it all and realised how bad the standard insert is (sorry Jonathan Gilmour & Isaac Vega but its true!). Lots of plastic baggies are provided which is great for all the tokens, standees and dice, but the theres nowhere for the cards to go, so they just slide around getting all mixed up, meaning you have to sort them out every time you want to play a game - which can take ages as there is 15 different decks... I put rubber bands around mine, but that was just a temporary solution.

So I ordered some foamcore, gathered all the tools and had a go.

I decided I wanted every single different item and deck of cards separate so it would make setting up the game (and packing it away) nice and quick.

I spent a while doing some measurements and rough designs before I came up with this one.

So how did I fit all of this:

into here:

The instruction book and board sit on top covering everything:

Underneath them you have the location cards and player reference boards:

I decided I wanted each deck of cards to have its own holder, and after looking at what the decks were, and how tall each stack was, it made sense to split them into 3's (2 trays of item decks, the crossroad cards split in half with the character cards, the starter items with the secret objectives and crisis cards and then the exiled, betrayal and main objectives). Then one large tray for all the survivor standees, and one for the zombies.

Lifting out the token tray shows the second stack of card trays and the zombie tray:

A closeup of the token tray shows that each different token has its own slot, with plenty of space to get your fingers in to access them, with a bigger one for the first player token, round trackers, exposure die and a spare plastic stand I got:

A shot of all the card trays removed:

Each of the card trays has an open front to allow easy access to the cards, and they all a slightly different height depending on the size of the card stacks:

This image shows the box with just the survivor and zombie trays left:

A close up of the zombie and survivor trays (showing off my horrific cutting skills...):

And finally everything out of the box:

So this was my first ever foamcore build, and I learnt a lot from it. I wanted everything to be removable and easy to access which I managed. As you will see from the photos some of my cuts are pretty bad, as is some of the positioning of the walls and dividers in the trays. The glueing also isn't great - I'm putting this down to experience (and maybe rushing as I was excited...) and hopefully the next one I do will be better. Unfortunately my measurements were a bit off so with the board and instructions in the box lid sits about 5mm higher than it should (and being a perfectionist this annoys me greatly. I've also decided that I want to sleeve all of my cards, which means they won't fit in the current card trays, so it's going to be back to the drawing board. I will probably end up redoing it within the week, so will post about the Mk II when it is done.

Happy to answer anyones questions, and I can post the designs in the files section if people want me to.

Edit: The plans are up in the files section here: Dead of Winter Custom Foamcore Insert Mk. I

Other than the age of our kids my story is exactly the same. Please post the plans in the files section. And thanx for the foamcore tutorial link. I hadn't seen that before.

Did I mention my son? I'm confused.

But yes no worries, I'll get the plans up ASAP (need to draw up some readable ones...)

But i do have a son and he is 26 days old.

Anyway hope you like the insert!

You're welcome, will try to get it done asap. And yes it does make it so much quicker. Packing up still takes a little while as you have to separate all the cards, but setting up is ridiculously quicker - just pull everything out, have a quick shuffle and you're ready.

I'm off work on Friday and am going to remake it with enough space for sleeved cards - so watch this space.

(Aiming to get plans up within the next couple of days)

I thought the same thing. The stock insert just doesnt cut it. here is my foamcore effort. Sorry I didnt make any formal plans.

My goal was to keep the different types of cards separate, and have pull out trays for the tokens and stands used in game.

Very nice, very nice! I am very very jealous of your frosted dice. Mine are in my basket, just need to wait for payday! I like your design, and you obviously have more experience than me (cuts and joins are better!), although I still think I prefer having every single deck of cards separate. Looking forward to the redesign on Friday.

Thanks I had the frosted dice before I had the game lol. I had pre-ordered from Plaid Hat and I got all excited during the long wait. I heard about the frosted dice craze on their podcast so I ordered the dice to be ready when it finally arrived.
Then I got the box signed by Jon and Isaac at Gencon. I didn't think about it at the time, but I should have gotten the dice box signed as well. I think it would have been funny to have.

I really like your design and having all of the cards separate. I'm sure it speeds up the game play set up which is one thing I really aim for with building an insert. I think the design is the hardest part and biggest hurdle when making the inserts.

I haven't been making inserts too long. DoW was probably 6th one, and only second one that I have been happy with, it takes some practice but believe me when I say yours looks much better than some of my early attempts!

the key to a clean cut is a sharp blade and a metal straight edge.

there is a great thread about it over here

Nice! I heard about the dice on the PHG podcast too, just need that paycheck...

Good work getting the box signed, that's pretty cool!

Thanks for the compliment, it does indeed speed up set up. Literally pull everything out and you're good to go. And as there is normally at least 3 of you playing you can shuffle the decks in no time.

This was my first insert and as I said I learnt a hell of a lot. Found out about the cutting pretty quick... I'm looking forward to having another go at the weekend, I have sleeves for all of the cards now (and would like to fit the board in and still close the box) so I'm going to have to have a good think about the design.

Will post a follow up thread with the new design.

Love this design. The removable trays look great.

Can't wait for your Mk II designs.

Hopefully, I'll have my copy next week and I'll start working on this soon after.

I remeasured everything this evening so I have everything written down, will type it up tomorrow as my hand writing is terrible - so the plans will be up at some point tomorrow.

Thanks I appreciate it. Played again tonight and it really does make it so much easier, although I definitely have some improvements to make.

I've built it, but it's still not quite right. I can throw together some drawings without measurements if you want, but personally I'd rather not as I'm a perfectionist and want it to be just right. I'm probably going to wait until the expansion comes out before re-doing it.

I thought I would share my Dead of Winter custom foam core insert as well. http://imgur.com/a/Wjzv2 I made it yesterday and I am very happy with how it turned out. It was my first ever attempt at a custom insert. I didn't have any plans or exact measurements. I used the images from this site http://www.searing.me/robstore to help guide me. It took me maybe 4 hours to do it, but it was well worth it. I'm looking forward to making more for other games in my collection.

I wasn't totally happy with some of the DoW organiser designs out there, so I thought I'd have a go at my own. My goal was to have separate storage for the card types and separate containers for the setup cards and in game cards that don't have a space on the boards in a sort of casino-like card-shoe thing. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Great job really !!
sorry to ask but i'm kinda new in this foam insert things. What is the use of the main foam frame ? I think the foam boxes and trays could all fit in the original box without the foam frame, could'nt they ?

If you want built-in separators that organise the individual inserts, you need a frame to mount them on

Plus it just looks a bit nicer IMO.
