I've been having friends over for gaming and we typically have 6 people when we have games night. There are many great games that plays up to 5 but with 6 it get's little difficult. Also would like games that plays equally well with 2.. for quiter nights. Right now I have Power Grid, Antike, and they both plays from 2 to 6 player.. I don't know how good the Antike with 2 since never tried it but Power Grid was alright. So I guess I'm looking for a nice medium heavy games that plays equally well from 2 to 6 players.. Any recommendations?

You could try Railroad Tycoon or Age of Steam. I don't think I'd enjoy RRT with 2, but I know others that have. With the right maps, you can play Age of Steam with 2 players or up to 6.

I think that Carcassonne (with Inns and Cathedrals) plays very well with any number from 2 all the way up to six.

IMHO Carc gets way too chaotic at 6...

RRT plays best with six, actually. 2 players ends up being solitaire like but my fiance and I have still played it a number of times. Not really as much any more 2 player, but we have definitely done it and enjoyed it.

Bohnanza
Bohnanza is pretty good. My wife and I play it quite often with 2 players. It scales well to 5, but I haven't had a chance to play it with more than that.

It's light, quickish, and cheap.

ooh - I normally play Citadels with 6 or 7, but Sunday we played with 2. AWESOME! It's such a good game that way. We then did a 3 player and had similar good feelings. It's just not quite as good for 4, which is okay for us. We play Tichu with 4.

Edit: Oh.. you're looking for meatier... Age of Steam?

I guess I don't mind the chaos in 6 player Carc. Afterall, a little chaos never hurt nobody

I don't really like Bohnanza with just 2. I think it is great with 3-7 though.

I've tried to build up a group of nice 6-player games myself. We have the same problem with 6 coming some nights. Unfortunately, most of them play drastically different with 2, but here are the ones I enjoy that play 2-6:

Condottierre (weaker 2 player game)
Bohnanza (2-7)
Robo Rally (2-8)
Tongiaki (online variants by the author for both 2 and 6 player games)
Alhambra

I also have these two lighter game that play 3-6:
For Sale
Dragon's Gold

I'd second Tongiaki. It may look lighter than you want, but trust me, once you start to figure it out it definitely gets heavier (although still never *that* heavy )

And I shall champion my traditional nomination at this point. Alhambra works perfectly well with 5 or 6 *if* you play with the Vizier variant (allows a player to buy a tile out of turn.) I agree that it's dangerously random otherwise.

That's weird. This bit used to mention Shire Games, and tell you all how wonderful we are. But it seems to have got deleted. Let's see what happens this time ....

Conquest of the Empire - V.II rule system (as opposed to the original Risk-esque game).

This is a GREAT game and it is defintely worth picking up sharpish as Eagle Games have been bought out and I suspect it will soon be unavailable...

The thought of 6-player frollocks has me positively salivating.

I'd have to disagree with Alhambra. I really enjoy this with two (using the Dirk variation) or three. By four I start to look for something else and a five it becomes an exercise in frustration because one can basically never plan more than a move ahead.

To echo other voices on the thread, I do enjoy Citadels at both ends of the spectrum as it plays quite differently and enjoyable at each end.

If you're into wargames, the upcoming Onward Christian Soldiers (GMT Games) plays very well with anywhere from 2-7 players.

TransAmerica is a great game that plays from 2 to 6, with 6 being probably the most enjoyable, while 2 being the most tactical. It is quick to learn and plays fast. I have introduced it to my students in the high school board gaming club and they loved it and requested it so much I ended up keeping my copy at school in my drawer.

I really am not a fan of Trans America with only 2, but I like it quite a bit with 3-6.

I would second:

Gloria Mundi, if you like a game that has a very strong 'take that' element, but some very engaging decisions to make.

Carcassonne, if you like that sort of thing.

Power Grid, terrific game

and I would add:

Wildlife, this is a very good gamer game.

Iliade, is a terrific card game that some feel plays better with more players.

Runebound, if you are looking for an epic fantasy boardgame. However, you should use the character decks if you are one of those that feels there is too much downtime in the game.
