Three of us have been playing this game on a regular basis recently and are using the "UP" expansion. This results in higher point scores and on more than one occassion an instant win.

The other day we had two players both get an instant win on the same scoring turn.

This lead to the question of what is the definition of instant? One player claimed that as casinos are scored in size from lowest to highest first, that his casino, which was smaller than the other players, hit the instant win first and at that point he had won and the game should have ended before the second (bigger) casino scored.

So, does instant mean instant, or does it mean after all casinos have been scored ?

Thanks for any thoughts

Look over the scoring section in the rules carefully. It says:

When you are paid points for multiple casinos on
the same turn, you must record each casino’s points
individually, starting with the smallest and proceeding
to the largest (your choice on ties). So, even if several
casinos of 1 tile each pay you on the same turn, your
scoing chip still cannot move from the 8-space to the
10-space.

When YOU are paid points from multiple casinos. That means you don't resolve all casinos individually by size for everyone, but each player does so for their own casinos. This would presumably happen all at the same time, so they should both get the win. Otherwise, you could just say whichever player decided to move his marker first would be the winner.

If you want to get real technical, if player A had a total of five casinos, with only the last one pushing him over the edge to the Instant Win, and player B had a total of two casinos, with the last one pushing him over the edge to Instant Win, then you could say player B is the winner, since both first casinos did nothing, and the second casino pushed B over, while A still had to score 3 others. This kind of minute timing is ridiculous, as is the original argument that one player beats the other because he had a smaller casino (since the whole point of the game and scoring track is to make larger casinos).

So in my opinion, I would state that scoring is all instantaneous, and any players at the Instant Win after scoring is complete are all declared winners.

I agree with you DoomTurtle and in the case in question we ruled that both players had got an instant win and then tiebraked on money.

But that still doesn't alter the fact that a player will argue that as casinos are scored smallest to biggest as soon as the smaller casino has scored he wins instantly.

But like I showed you in the rules, casinos aren't scored smallest to largest. Only a player that gets points from multiple casinos scores their own casinos from smallest to largest (which I presume is done to prevent rule questions or manipulate your casinos in a certain order to get higher on the score track due to breaks).

There is nothing in the rulebook that says a smaller casino from player A scores before a larger casino from player B. So player A really has no argument to make.

Yes, but you have put the emphasis on the word you in the rules. That sentance could easily be read that when you, ie the players, score casinos they are scored individually from smallest to biggest.

The phrase "when you score" may not neccesarily mean you the individual.

Just saying it could be open to interpretation.
