I say "I'm not interested" and hang up.

I don't understand why people who hate telemarketers because (a) they're an intrusion and (b) they waste my time will boast about how much time they allowed this intrusion to take. I don't like telemarketers either, and I feel the same way, which is why as soon as I know that this is what I'm dealing with, I hang up and get on with my life.

One time, we consolodated our credit card debt. It wasn't a lot, and the bank was happy to extend a credit line to cover it. The funny part was that between the two of us we had 17 credit cards. Really, it wasn't that much debt total, but 17 cards!? Most of them were department store cards, heck, almost all of them were.

We kept one joint Visa and one joint MasterCard. This is not a tale of financial woe, we just downsized our wallets.

But I had to call Citibank, a company that makes credit cards serious business. So I had a plan.

A: "I'd like to cancel my credit card please".

C: "We can help you with that. Please hold while I transfer you to an account retention specialist"

...
...

C: "Hello and thank you for holding, my name is ______. So you want to cancel your Citibank mastercard?"

A: "Yes"

C: "Well at Citibank we value your business and I would like to encourage you to reconsider that decision. May I ask why you want to cancel your account?"

A: " Well, its a bit of a story, but what has happened, er, well, see, we've converted to a religion that does not allow us to carry credit cards".

C: " .... "
C: " .... "
C: "Well, ok, that is, uh. Well. I suppose there isn't much of a point in trying to change your mind, is there?"

A: "No, not really. Thank you for understanding".

C: "Ok well I've cancelled your account and thank you very much for your business. If you ..er, ever ... well if you ever need a credit card again, please give us a call"

A: "Thank you".

That's brillant! Funny...

I just usually receive those survey telemarketers and they are usually not really fun to screw with, but since the political races are in full swing I have been having a ball fooling with them. Usually, I will sit still and listen to what they have to say and then after the phone call has ended and we both have hang up...I *69 them and pretend to be a telemarketer from the other political party.

Usually, I start right off with a spill of why they as a voter should not vote for their canidate (negative ads) and then I will poll their opinions that is if they haven't already hung up. If they do hang up I call again and again each time expressing my sorrow for being accidently disconnected. They usually blurt out that they hung up on me, but before they hang up again...I ask "Have you ate your Wheaties today?" Click...usually follows.
