We played our first session of Cthulhu Wars last Sunday! We were planning a four-player game, but one player had to cancel on short notice so we played 3 players instead. After describing the rules, we decided to exclude Yellow Sign as it seemed like the strangest faction gameplay-wise, although we loved the theme! I played Black Goat while my friends played Cthulhu and Crawling Chaos.

Early Game

In the first turn, Cthulhu spread his cultists, then recruited Deep Ones. One of his cultists went to the Pacific Ocean, which made him easy prey for Nyarlathotep's first-move Nightgaunt. Thus Crawling Chaos got their Capture spell book on turn one. Black Goat sacrificed two cultists for a spell book (Red Sign) on the first action, then built a ghoul for defence and a Dark Young for expansion.

Nyarlathotep manifested on the second turn, and the Crawling Chaos now had the power draining Thousand Masks and Madness. Unfortunately for him, this painted a bit of a target on his head, and the Cthulhu and Black Goat refused to fight when CC used Madness to push them together. (Well, there was one scuffle in Antarctica between a Shoggoth and a Dark Young. But that hardly counts!)

Mid-Game

Shub-Niggurath manifested in turn 3, immediately gaining the Thousand Young spell book and using it next action to summon a monster horde at its portals. Nyarlathotep decided to try for some early Elder Signs, invading Africa with an escort of one cultist and two Hunting Horrors. It went poorly for Crawling Chaos, scoring only one pain while the Black Goat and its frenzied cultists scored four kills, wiping the expedition out. It would be two turns before Nyarlathotep reappeared, this time in North America.

Cthulhu continued to expand its gates, and had completed all non-awakening spell books except the devour/kill ones. It was time to summon the big guy:

Late Game

By the final start of the last full turn, I had taken a strong lead as Black Goat, with 21 points on the Doom Track and 7 hidden points in Elder Signs. The others agreed that I had to take a fall this turn.

To start things off, Cthulhu and his submerged horde erupted in Africa. I knew that Black Goat couldn't hold them off, so I used Avatar to retreat my Great Old One to his now-empty South Pacific gate. While Cthulhu took the Africa gate, Nyarlathotep killed Black Goat forces in the Indian Ocean. Black Goat continued to fortify the South Pacific, and used Necrophagy to set up Ghouls for gate captures. Cthulhu moved on to Asia, where he alone fought a single frenzied cultist. I'm happy to report it was a mutual kill! (Fortunately for me, the Cthulhu player did not have enough energy to re-emerge at my new base in the South Pacific!) Nyarlathotep decided to use his last few points of energy consolidating some of the gates that had been stolen from Black Goat that turn. I was just happy to escape with a few gates and my Great Old One still manifested.

The game ended with the next Doom Phase. Black Goat won with 39 points, Nyarlathotep and Great Cthulhu were each in the very high 20s. Cthulhu had achieved all six spell books in that final Doom phase, but Nyarlathotep was missing the two "pay power as an action" books.

Overall, we all had a lot of fun with it! I think we all have ideas for how to tweak our strategies for a future game. We also really want to get Yellow Sign into the picture. Our excitement for Cthulhu Wars has not waned at all, and that's a good thing! :-)

Avatar has to switch places with another figure -- not sure if you mean this. Doesn't seem like it would have mattered much, but something to note. Anyways, thanks for the session report and images!

He had left one unit behind in South Pacific, which I sent to Africa when using Avatar. So it was empty *after* I used the ability. :-)

Grin, seems like the standard "Oh yeah, don't ever leave cultists unguarded" learning game.

Sounds fun.
