Quote:
Embattled U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum said America has avoided a second terrorist attack for five years because the “Eye of Mordor” has been drawn to Iraq instead.

Santorum used the analogy from one of his favorite books, J.R.R. Tolkien's 1950s fantasy classic “Lord of the Rings,” to put an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq into terms any school kid could easily understand.

“As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else,” Santorum said, describing the tool the evil Lord Sauron used in search of the magical ring that would consolidate his power over Middle-earth.

Now any school kid knows how little Santorum knows.

I always thought this regime was living fantasy world. Now it seems they are.

Blasphemous! Santorum invoking Tolkien and Iraq in the same breath? I can't wait for this guy to get the boot!

While it might make the Daily Show I'm putting my money on Colbert.

I'm getting very tired of hearing simpletons say that we have avoided another terrorist attack in the U.S. because of this, that, or the other reason. Big deal, it's been 5 years since 9/11 and we haven't been attacked. From February 26, 1993 until September 11, 2001 we went 8 1/2 years without a terrorist attack. And that was without the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq. Going 5 years without an attack doesn't prove jack.

That we're almost *bored* by the news now only suggests to me that we've pretty much resigned ourselves to whatever the Next Big Thing is.

You've reminded me of something else that galls me. Is there anybody who doubts that the people who currently crow about how safe we are under the brilliant leadership of the Republicans and President Bush, will be the same people who will be loudly proclaiming how crucial it will be to maintain the status quo (ie. elect Republicans, not Democrats, because the latter won't protect you) if the Next Big Thing does happen. Nothing stirs up my skepticism more than somebody who trys to set up a "no lose" scenario for their own benefit. Well, actually, there is something that stirs up my scepticism more; it's somebody who asks me to reward ineptitude.

Speaking of rewarding ineptitude -- there should be some sort of monument to the 109th Congress somewhere. More than the "Bridge to Nowhere", I mean. Something like an eternal flame of pig offal next to a statue of a defecating Republican elephant.

As for Senator Man on Dog, well... it's only a matter of time before the Star Wars analogies come out.

Score!

He tried to pick apart the analogy (The US is Mordor!), pulled out LotR toys, he had to stop himself from going on and on...
