So I was casually strolling through my local B&N when lo and behold, THEY HAVE PUERTO RICO. Now I was taken aback. Truly they have carried a few designer games before, but here in front of me was proof that they are taking game selling seriously!

In addition to Puerto Rico, I spied settlers of catan (which I'm not sure if that is new for them), Carcassonne and RHEINLANDER! (talk about an odd game for them to carry!)

There were a few other notable games on the table, but my age is getting to me, so you may want to check what your local B&N has.

Classy.

Edit: But I'm sure you're "just kidding" and I have no sense of humor.

I also saw Puerto Rico and SOC in my local B&N and I ended up buying Shear Panic, but when I asked an employee there about whether or not they would continue to expand their selection of games, he said this was a promo for National Games Week and that he didn't think they would have stock of the games year round. So a glimmer or hope and then....not! Maybe the games will do so well that B&N will decide to carry them year round and even expand more

Is it just me or are new games standing on the edge of the knife right now?

There just seems to be a lot more public awareness of them than there was a year or so back. I'm wondering if there's going to be a run on things in the next year or two.

MSRP when I was there today, but supposedly they go on sale at some point. Anyone know what that point is? My guess would be after Christmas, if they last that long.

At my local BN, I saw:

Puerto Rico
Settlers of Catan
Shear Panic
Hey Thats my fish!
and a couple of Reiner Knizia games (I know he has a million, but thats all I can remember about them).

Carcassonne was in the "Puzzle section".

I too thought that PR was a wierd addition. Dont get me wrong, its a great game, but I would think games by Days of Wonder would have fit better in a mainstream bookstore.

I hope that this trend continues, or at least no one buys them and they have to sell them on clearance

Great news for us as it will undoubtedly catch a few people's eye... I hope they did some good research and know how to further market this into a larger effort.

It would be good to get some of our more borderline gaming friends to perhaps buy a couple from B&N as it may promote the hobby which in the long run will help the FLGSs more...

I saw the above also at the B&N in Geneva Commons in Geneva, IL. Also saw:

Blokus
Niagra
Axis & Allies

All games were at full MSRP.

Hoping they last till after Christmas for some good deals.

These are new for B&N...They won't go on sale before the holidays, but if you can wait until the end of January early February you can get them for a song if they have any left. I picked up a pile of Steve Jackson stuff and copies of various monopoly games for $1 after the holidays..

How do I know this will happen? Worked there until June 2006..

Until then they will be MSRP, then the discounts will gradually be added on until either they sell out or they drop to a buck...

You guys are funny! It's a big shocker that these games appear at B&N, then you actually hope noone buys them so you can get them at a discount? Yeah, that'll really make them want to carry this stuff in the future...

Exactly what I was thikning! LOL!!! Best deal would be if they all sold out before the holidays at MSRP. Maybe some Corporate bean counters might notice and come up with a great idea like "HEY, let's stock these YEAR ROUND and EXPAND our selection in the hopes of those selling out." Of course, Corporate Bean Counter would get a huge bonus for his/her wonderful idea.

I will buy a game every once in a while at a brick and mortar store to keep them in business - I just bought Thurn und Taxis in Huntsville - but the some of the B & N prices are unbelievable:

Niagara is $27 at cardhaus vs. $50 at B & N

Yea... I definitely don't disagree that they are pretty expensive... maybe that is what is turning off new people to gaming?

Yes.

When I introduce new people to games, they are shocked at the (retail) prices. Even so, sometimes (Ticket to Ride, Lost Cities) they have liked the game so much that they bought their own copy - at retail! - before I even had the chance to tell them they needn't pay that much.

Other games - Niagara... - well, let's just say I'm still the only one I know with a copy.

At my local Barnes and Noble, they were right in the middle of the store as you went in. Some decent stuff to. Unfortunately, I had about all of them. Besides Puerto Rico locally, I saw:
- I'm the Boss.
- Rhinelander.
- Remake of Tablut Rasa (the Knizia game).
- Tsaro(?)

I was pretty impressed. I was tempted to pick up the smaller boxed version of Rhinelander, but decided $50 was too much.

I hope they sell out like crazy and they decide to stock new stuff after Christmas. People, stop thinking saving a few bucks. Think the good of the hobby here!
