Brian Boru is unusual in that his hammer effects actually hurt Ireland in defense.

It is a bit odd, but its based on his performance at the battle of Clontarf, where due to misreading the situation he ending up winning the battle but losing his life.

Yup, exactly what Kevin said. The hammer abilities often correspond with intervention from the gods - old or new. According to legend, he was praying in his tent after his victory at Clontarf when he was murdered by a fleeing Viking. His ability was supposed to represent the gods working against him.

Also, the Viking who allegedly struck him down was Brodir who is a character in this game. Brodir's brother Ospak is also in this game, but fought for the other side in the battle of Clontarf.
