I am not a tech geek. Stating that first.

I downloaded the Windows version on my laptop and I am getting a "game crashed" message. Any thoughts or advice?

I did just get a WinBook 7 tablet with 8.1.
Would this work?

Again any input would be appreciated. I am anxious to play

I am pretty sure it has the 32 bit full version.

I just verified it if the full version of Windows 8.1 not the RT.

I am thinking of upgrading the Kindle I have to the Fire version to simplify matters. Than I can just get the Android App from Amazon.

If you are sure you have Windows 8.1 not RT. The next step would be to check what kind of Graphiccard you have, and if your drivers are up to date. Does the App crash instantaneously? Or do you see the Dialog where you can select the Resolution?
Either way, try getting new drivers for your Graphiccard.
You could also check if the Web version works, but remember you need to install the unity web player plugin.

I actually had trouble running the app on my Surface Pro 3 running 8.1.

As strange as this sounds - it wouldn't run if I had the app on the desktop. If I moved it to anywhere else on the computer - in any different folder - it ran just fine.

Maybe make a folder at root - c:/xcom - and stick the files in there to see if it runs.

EDIT - but, that said - are you trying it on the Winbook 7 - the $100 or so windows tablet? I'm not sure that's full windows if that's the case... It's only running like 16gb of space and a really trimmed down processor right?

Yes it has the full version of 8.1, but only the 16GB space and the low end processor.

I just got it yesterday and have not tried much with it yet.

I do appreciate the response very much & will try some of the suggestions. Thanks!

The app does crash instantly. No resolution dialog box.

I believe the graphics card drivers may be the problem on the laptop. I did try the web version & installed the Unity with no results.

I think my lack of tech skills may be the largest barrier here

Thank you for the response.

I wanted to thank all of you who responded with advice very much.
I ended up upgrading my Kindle and got a Fire HD (which I love)and got the App in like 30 seconds.

Have fun and play a game
