Subject: What's your new game ritual? rss

My new game ritual:

1. Check the price on Amazon.
2. See what BGG thinks (rank, rating, photos)
3. Watch Rahdo runs through videos (all of them)
4. See what Dice Tower thinks
5. Buy it! (or skip it)
6. Instantly regret buying a new game when I know damn well I have games I still haven't played yet!
7. Watch all the other videos on it (watch it played, viking, tabletop, etc) while I excitedly wait for it to arrive.

Is that pretty much how it goes for everybody?

1. See the cover and look at the info on here
2. Purchase it if it is something I believe I can get people interested in
3. Remove it from shrink possibly to look at components
4. Have it sit on the shelf for 6+ months until I finally do manage to get it played.

Geez--word for word what I was going to say. I might add "this game will be different..it's better than the others..I know I can get this one to the table."

When I first hear about a game that sounds interesting, I'll stick the game on my Amazon Wishlist and monitor the price as it fluctuates up and down while I consider my purchase. I'll check my FLGS, CSI, MM, and a bunch of others for availability and pricing, and setup "back in-Stock reminders" as necessary. I'll continue researching the game, while I consider purchasing it. The can take minute, hours, days or months, depending on my interest level from the research, availability, number of games I currently have on ordere and price. Getting the game to the table the first time USUALLy isn't a problem, my gaming group is pretty good about trying the new games right away. Keeping it coming back has been the issue, especially if one us gets another new game, or the game doesn't shine immediately.

1) Discover a new game/expansion through a podcast, friend, game group, BGG
2) Read/watch everything I can find about it on BGG and YouTube
3) Look at my bank account *sigh*
4) Order it anyway. Look at bank account *weep gently*
5) Reread/rewatch everything I can find about it on BGG and YouTube.
6) Impatiently wait for it to be delivered (while eating odd meals made of leftovers and walking everywhere due to having no money)
7) Parcel delivered to office, scheme some way of finishing early so I can go home asap to unpack it.
8) Give up scheming, sulk and do minimum amount of work possible until the end of the day.
9) Rush home as soon as possible. Straight into my bedroom (I share a flat, don't want to be unboxing in the lounge with my muggle housemates who might ruin the game as soon as the shrink wrap comes off).
10) Ever so gently slice open the shrink wrap.
11) Reverently take the lid off.
12) Take all components out very carefully.
13) Gently unpack, unwrap and punch them all out.
14) Compare them to the list of components to make sure I'm not missing anything (if possible).
15) Softly repack everything.
16) Read the instructions.
17) Start thinking about plans for a custom insert.
18) Add the game to my shelf.
19) Add the game to my collection on BGG.
20) Play game at earliest opportunity.
21) Look at bank account *sigh*
22) Discover a new game/expansion through a podcast, friend, game group, BGG............

3. Wonder where to put it.
4. Wonder some more where to put it.
5. Shifting games to make room for it.

Also I like to watch ConraDargo (a Swedish guy) and Marnaudo if they have videos of the game.

This sums it up laugh

Best summary ever.

But -- I feel I am on the road to recovery (slightly).

They had 10% off games at my FLGS this weekend and my friend (who works there) was trying to talk me into Aquasphere ... I resisted!

I did, however, buy the new expansion for Elder Sign AND played it immediately at the store with a friend. Very good, by the way.

Auctions are still my Achilles's heel, though. Mad at myself for not buying Kingsport Festival for $28, too (CSI deal of the day). It was $47 at the FLGS. Ugh.

1.) Find game on BGG or Dice Tower
2.) Read about it/look at it
3.) Add to Amazon Wishlist
4.) Purchase on Amazon or at FLGS the next day
5.) Take off Amazon Wishlist
6.) Cut/remove plastic
7.) Punch and bag components
8.) Replace older/less good game on main games shelf with new one
9.) Read the rules the night before I plan to play it the first time
10.) Repeat 1-9 each successive week

Hmmmm...I may have a problem...whistle

So i am not alone and crazy

This post made me LOL in the office!

As we speak i'm trying to justify buying another game after receiving Mage Knight Board Game: The Lost Legion & Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island – Voyage of the Beagle (Vol. 1) on Friday...

Board games are like Peyote and heroin combined with crack sprinkled on top.

Because any ritual must be written in a cryptic language!
